No one can pull a Pink Floyd cover off like Kylesa can.

I saw Why? tonight and I thought it was pretty fantastic. It combined my favorite things- cutesy pop, intelligent hip-hop, glockenspiels and Jewish men. Opening was Fake Project, which sounded to like like the Go! Team would sound like if they traded the pom poms for more distortion and a heavier bass.

Goddangit guys, I look like I am double posting but there are QUITE A FEW DAYS between the two.
I saw American Music Club! But rembember page 2 of this thread? You know, where Tommy and Sox made "obscure tshirt designs" about American Music Club? There were about 25 people at this show. MAYBE. They were all "Thanks to the two people who actually like us". I wanted to hug them all.
(Afterwards I went to my friends place and watched Beautiful Girls and had my first "WTF is that Greg Dulli?" experience)

Saw These United States (twice) yesterday, once with Motel Motel
The first TUS show was a live in-studio at WXBC that I helped set up/hung out at. It was a really stripped down setup with the drummer using wire brushes on a hardback suitcase. It was great though and some other radio people and I got dinner with the band after the show. They're really cool guys. I guess I could describe them as a fairly rollicking psyche-folk rock band with a singer that sorta reminded me of that guy from Kings of Leon.
The night show, in Smog, was incredible. Motel Motel blew me away. I had never heard of them before but I'm very glad I went to the show and now know about them. They played fairly cross genre stuff, music that swung from folk to bluegrass to insane instrumental rock. The songs verged on 8 minutes each and careened all over the place, devolving from somewhat placid folk rock to brilliant and intense almost "post-rock"ish instrumental jams before dropping down into quiet, piano driven movements. The vocalist was really terrific and an incredibly nice guy. I talked to him after the show and it's really cool to see someone so enthusiastic about and into making music. Check these guys out if they ever play around you since it was an awesome performance.
These United States were also great. With the full set up, which included a bad ass pedal steel guitar and harmonica on top of the lineup used in-studio, the band was seriously rocking, really loud and super high energy. Apparently they're on a 33 show tour where each night they have a different opening band which plays with them. After playing four songs on their own, the three piece TUS was joined by the four members of TUS and three audience members. There were ten people jamming out. The band played TUS songs but no one in the audience or even from Motel Motel really knew the songs beyond having heard them a couple times so they became largely improvised. In addition to the full drum kit, two members of MM and the three audience members all played on partial kits, making for 6 percussionists which was fucking insane. There were also two guitarists, a bassist, a keyboardist and three singers. The sound was huge and raucous and the whole atmosphere was basically one of uninhibited fun.
It was a pretty flawless show overall. The sound was incredible, the audience was small but really into the music and all the musicians seemed really into it. Definitely one of the better shows I've seen recently.

last night: Trouble vs. Glue
Quite honestly, the one good thing I can say is that the girl in the band played a nice, sparkly red Danelectro U2.
That's about it. They weren't good at all. I'm glad I didn't pay to get in. Neither of them had particularly good voices.
