Woah, I remember that conversation. I think I may have mentioned a somewhat negative, perhaps uninspired is a better word, experience seeing Shearwater live but it's cool you got to go and enjoyed it. 21+ age restrictions are silly since most venues I go to serve alcohol at all shows regardless of age limits.

Liz:
It was SO GOOD. I was in heaven the whole time. And I found out that they are doing a headlining tour, one show of which will be in Toronto the day I would leave if I decide to attend Tronnocon.

Grrr. Boo. Hiss.

Last week I saw Jason And The Scorchers, and it was absolutely incredible. The band played their ass off, most notably Warner E. Hodges, the guitarist.
He really pulled out all the stops, with the pirouettes-while-playing and the guitar-slingin' and the chunkiest, meatiest Telecaster-sound in the history. That man has officially changed my opinion on Telecasters, so much that I even considered buying one the next day.
His playing was also absolutely amazing. He is hands down one of the rockingest motherfuckers on the planet, and anyone who dares dispute this fact are DEAD WRONG. He had unbelievable stage presence, downright scary chops and stage moves that shouldn't be physically possible, considering the man's Texas-sized beer gut. Plus that, he had a beard and cracked some wicked jokes on stage. He is officially deemed awesome now.

Jason Ringenberg is still the same ol' lanky, hyperactive, made-of-rubber-bands shitkicker he's always been. Tacky rhinestones, cowboy hat and snakeskin boots and all. His vocals were on fine form, as well as some fantastic stage banter and humour. The rapport between him, Warner and the crowd created a down-home, fun atmosphere within seconds.

The drummer was a new guy, from some swedish roots rock band whose name I didn't catch. He did however rock the fuck out of the kit, and really looked like he was having the time of his life.
The bass player was not really rocking out, but his playing was spot-o.

Nevertheless, they played a really long set, with a twenty minute break in the middle for autographs. Sadly, they didn't play "White Lies", my favourite song of theirs, but other than that it was utter kickass. I am SO gonna see it when they come back next year. Not all reunions suck. Some of 'em, are downright fantastic.

I got given free entry to We Are Scientists last night and was kind of underwhelmed... the high point was possibly Keith getting semi-naked onstage, and when a gig earns its points from generic indie-fitness and seemingly rehearsed banter, it's generally a sign that something's amiss...
That said, Maths Class were supporting - saw them support Blood Brothers last year before they split, and a couple of times since then and they were awesome - if anyone ever sees their name on a bill, see them live - they're like the band Foals wish they could be if they made the passage out of their own self-involved scenester-dom.

sean:
I just listened to Maths Class. They are actually very good! I usually don't dig pop-electro-punk whatever, but these guys are very enjoyable. It must have something to do with my long-standing crush on the Blood Brothers. I can see why they played a show with them.

Anyway gig thread, I'm seeing A Silver Mt. Zion next week. Expect copious amounts of gushing then!
