Gig update: Not going to Wilco on Tuesday! My friends are lame and all sold their tickets, leaving me ride-less (and a taxi would be mad expensive).

I saw NIN at the Air Canada Centre, and snagged backstage passes. Got to watch the soundcheck - they are intense people. It was really cool - met Robin, Josh and Justin of the band, but Trent and Alessandro weren't exactly social. The show itself was amazing - it was more than a concert, it was a spectacle. I was impressed too by the energy that they exhibited, especially considering Trent was extremely sick. If you get the chance (and have the incredible ability to ignore all the douchebags that attend) go see NIN. Having to sit through Deer Hunter was even worth it.

Last monday my mom had 2 tickets to see Return to Forever. Now, I didn't know too much about who they were, and knowing my mom, I thought it would just be a buncha old jazz fans sitting around nodding their heads, and politely clapping between each song.
Turns out Lenny White busted out his rolodex before the show, so they had Larry Coryall opening for them. And his set was exactly like what I thought it would be. It clearly showed that they'd been together again for like six hours. Every song was just a simple back beat by the drummer, and everybody else in the band just took it in turn to solo over what they had. Now, I know this sounds like a lot of music, but I'm finding it hard to express. Like, it had a jam band feel written all over it. I don't think they even rehearsed anything they played. I'd give 'em a solid B-.
Then, after a fifteen-minute intermission, Return to Forever came on. I was not prepared for what ensued. I've never seen that many fifty-somethings rocking the fuck out, and by God it was hilarious. Plus they kicked some serious ass on stage. I didn't really know who was in it, but these guys are the who's who of jazz fusion. Chick Corea on keyboards, who is not only a hell of a keyboardist but even more so of a composer; Lenny White on the drums, who was not really given his chance to shine during the show. You had to pick apart the music to get a taste of how he is as a drummer, but god damn he's impressive; Stanley Clarke on the bass, who gets several props for being one of the first people to play the bass like it was a lead instrument. Dude is funky. And finally, an idol of mine, Al Di Meola on guitar. Dude was playing the hippiest guitar I've ever seen, rainbow-striped PRS. But god damn he is an impressive musician.
They surprised me so much with what they brought to the table. I mean, these guys are all good as shit on their respective instruments, but they're also in their 50's and 60's. I didn't expect much, and they blew my mind. Considering their impressive stage presence, I'd give 'em an A-.
