A guy in my band is under the impression that when we're "practicing", aka covering songs for fun, Coldplay is an acceptable choice.
And, here's my high school's favorite music:
1 Coldplay
2 R&b
3 Rap
4 Pink Floyd
5 Hip Hop
6 Weezer
7 Rock
8 Red Hot Chili Peppers
9 Queen
10 Maroon 5
What oddballs we have.

God damn that's depressing.
On the Kerouack thing, people often add things they've never read/seen/listened to to their favorites for the cool points (see: Pulp Fiction). Kerouack's books are definitely in that category of things.
