Datarock
« on: 24 Nov 2007, 02:10 »

I was bored and sleep deprived and a little drunk last week and stumbled upon a live musical performance of this band Datarock, who I'd never heard of before, on some late night talk show.  I started watching in mid-song so I had no idea who it was, and my first thought was that it absolutely had to be Trans Am.  And as they played, I concluded it had to be Trans Am in disguise playing the kind of joke that Trans Am always plays on most of their albums.  They completely rocked in a really absurd retro-Commodore-64 meets math rock way.  Looking online I can't find much info.  But I've seen Trans Am live and I swear they look exactly like the dudes in Datarock.  Am I hallucinating?  Are their albums good?  Have I grown so far past irony that I can't even tell the difference between genuine music and ironic mugging?  For the record I am still aware that She Wants Revenge are a joke band that pretends not to be, so I'm not completely clueless.

Here's what I think of 'em:

Huh, they're on Nettwerk.  I thought Nettwerk only put out singer-songwriter girls like (SHAMELESS NAMEDROP AND PLUG) my friend Jenny Owen Youngs these days.

With a few notable exceptions, I tend not to pay attention to the label a band's on when reviewing unless they're not on one at all.

I don't either, but Nettwerk was such a big part of my youth (when they put out Skinny Puppy, Consolidated, Tear Garden, and other, less memorable industrial and goth bands) that I had to take notice.

I actually have a Nettwerk sampler CD from 1994 or so.  It is quite amusing.  I play it sometimes if only for the fact that it has Consolidated's "Crackhouse" on it.
