Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions
« on: 12 Oct 2007, 20:21 »

I got this along with Orange Box.  I sort of bought a PSP just for this game as I mentioned in another thread.  Final Fantasy Tactics is just about my favorite game ever made.

That said, the remake has one notable, serious flaw: slowdown.  It's almost as bad as Odin Sphere boss fight slowdown, but it happens every time a move is done other than simply attacking (even things as stupid as throwing rocks or rushing the enemy with the basic job skills).  Also, while I sincerely appreciate a new translation, they did a total 180 and made it a bad translation for another reason.  Some retard decided they wanted to make everyone talk with archaic words and archaic syntax, which in essense makes every character sound like the same stuffy British guy.  It's still preferred to the original (casting Lich = Rich, hahaha) but I wish they could have kept, you know, regular English dialogue instead of trying to make it something more intellectual than it really is.

AND WITH ALL THAT SAID

If you own a PSP, buy it.  Because it's still one of the best strategy games ever made.

The slowdown sounds suspiciously like the slowdown in the PS1 ports of the Final Fantasy games. I bought those on someone's promise that they were amazing and wonderful and I wanted to break their goddamn face after I played them.

Tactics is an amazing game though.

The slowdown sort of feels like any other 2d port I've ever played.  I don't have a summoner yet but so far, the rest is bearable.  I imagine summons will be atrocious, though, seeing as they caused slowdown on the original game.

How close is this game to the original?

Because I didn't actually like the original that much. It felt very unbalanced, especially early on. I much preferred the GBA game, which had a much more friendly learning curve.

That was my problem with the original game. Some missions would be a cakewalk and some missions would be incredibly frustrating. Plus, everybody said the plot was so amazing and all that, but I really didn't think it was anything special. Oh look, everybody's a traitor and they all die within two missions of them showing up. What's the point in even introducing all those characters if you're just going to kill them off before I know enough about them to even care if they die? Having a high body count and a convoluted plot doesn't make your game Shakespearean, sorry.

When it comes to strategy RPGs, I'll take Ogre Battle or Fire Emblem any day. Although I did like the GBA game, and I hope the sequel on the DS turns out well too.

Tactics was definitely a lot more fun. I mean, it was pretty easy later on, but then again I spent hours throwing rocks at my own team members in the first game and healing every round because the game was fucking stupid and allowed me to and had a sheer cliff for a learning curve.

I didn't really care for the GBA one too much because it was just too easy.  I never once felt threatened, making that entire game a cakewalk.  The story for the GBA one was pretty kiddy, too, which was a turn-off for me.

And as for how close it is to the original, it's the same game.  It's techincally a port with extra stuff, none of which I have encountered yet because I'm still going through the first chapter.  So if you didn't like it because you thought it was too difficult early on, you'll still not like it.  As for the story, I CAN ACTUALLY TELL WHAT IS GOING ON NOW!  I beat the original FFT many years ago and up until now, I had no idea what the hell was going on.  It feels like the first playthrough for me all over again because of that.

edit: I should mention, the first chapter isn't all that difficult if you don't care about your starting team getting waxed permanently.  You might lose one or two for good, but it's nothing a new recruit and a few random encounters won't solve.

I'd take a real new Shining Force over any of those. Or at least a remake of Shining Force 3, with all three scenarios.

I never played Shining Force (because the Genesis was for suckers), but I am skeptical about it being superior to Fire Emblem.

Because Fire Emblem is awesome.

Any superiority Fire Emblem has over Shining Force is solely due to Nintendo treating their great titles with actual respect and not abandoning them.

Sega sucks. :(

If you don't mind getting the greatest hits copy, you can get it for $20 - $30 on Ebay.

Black Label goes for about $45. Otherwise I still see the Greatest Hits at Gamestop/EB on occasion for $20 new.

If you have a PSP, just get the PSP version.

To get a copy of the original, happy hunting?  I don't know many places that carry PSX games anymore.

If you like this game, I recommend you take a look at Disgaea. This has also been ported to the psp recently.
Its like tactics, only far stranger.
Only bad thing is I got it before finishing tactics.

uhh, I've been around for a couple of months? And so have you? He is new here.....

erroneous much?

You're still most assuredly a "newbie." Hell, I've been around almost twice as long as you and I'm still a newbie. It's entirely hypocritical to call a person a newbie when you've been around for less than a fucking year, kiddo.
