Argh, I'm so gutted I missed Envy play the other week. It was at one of my favourite venues too.

Pierrot, Angelo and Cali=Gari are all pretty good (in my opinion)
This website: http://jrock-music.mylog.pl/ has heaps of full j-rock album downloads.
Also, King Brothers (another j-rock band) are apparently coming in a couple of months to melbourne. Does anyone know if it's worth checking out?

Why are people recommending good bands like Boris, Envy, the Boredoms, Guitar Wolf, Shonen Knife, Afrirampo, etc.  (And if you're going to mention good bands, for God's sake, Acid Mothers Temple are the most amazing live band of all time, ever, for real).

The OP is probably looking for stuff more in the vein of this:

We know, we just ignored him and decided to make it a thread partly about awesome Japanese bands. I think it's worked out pretty well, he got some recommendations for silly things and there was discussion of some excellent bands too.

Also, Flagitious Idiosyncracy In The Dilapidation. Really good grindcore.

No "good Japanese band" thread could ever be complete without mention of Ghost.  Proceed directly to Lama Rabi Rabi and Hypnotic Underworld now, and all their others are wonderful as well.

Mono.

Did anyone catch them on the most recent tour, where they were the second-to-last band to play and the other three bands were fairly bad but popular hardcore/metal?  I would think they'd have gotten ice thrown at them more than once.

I doubt it. In the UK they were touring with Jesu, and the two fan bases are, well, basically the exact same people. In the US it was Pelican wasn't it? The same goes for their fans. And for the record, Jesu are a pretty sweet band.

No, not at all.  Jesu and Pelican are great choices.  The tour they just did was with High On Fire and Coliseum and some other band.  The High On Fire/Coliseum fanbase, at least that I know of, are all rabid hardcore metal fans and could possibly be convinced to listen to an Isis album if their girlfriend insisted, and think that Boris are "pretty gay".

I'm serious.

Damn. Things are a little different round my way, all those bands are listened to by the exact same people so a High On Fire / Coliseum / Mono bill would get most people frothing at the mouth in excitement but they would be hideously torn if Boris were on the same day.

True story: I know a Japanese girl who lived in Tokyo until 2005 and loves Mogwai and all things post-rock, and when I told her to listen to Mono, she said "Who?"

I'll forgive this since it's your first post.  You should add some context when you say things like that.  Those bands are of a specialized j-rock subgenre and are "really good" if you like sort of light glam-horror-pop-metal.  Bands that niche I wouldn't recommend to everyone as a blanket statement, just as I wouldn't recommend, say, The Pipettes to everybody.

Yeah malice mizer are a little scary, I would like to add a rule, that people say if the band is visual kei or something that scares the fuck out of most people.
Cheers : )

I love Gackt, on Malice Mizer or off.  A little poppy, but not what passes for pop "music" these days.
