Fun Stuff > BAND
So I saw Dinosaur Jr. last night.
StaedlerMars:
I would probably pay to see them live, then ignore the stage completely, because I would be too engrossed in my own world.
Making me coming to the show a bit useless.
I really like their new album.
Spinless:
Nobody is obligated to give you an encore. I have this JoA bootleg, after the last song in a very short set the entire audience is screaming "ENCORE! ENCOOOOOOOOOORE!"
Everything goes a little quiet you Tim Kinsella calls out "Encores are boring!" and then the bootleg ends.
Jackie Blue:
Most bands I've seen play for at least an hour, then play a 30 minute or so encore. The Polyphonic Spree played 3 encores earlier this year because people really just wanted more.
So, speaking as a musician myself, in that sense, the "encore" is functional because you've been standing on stage molesting a guitar (or hammering on drums or whatever) for an hour or more. Lots of bands drink beer while they're playing, or water. After an hour, you probably need to take a piss, or wipe the sweat off and cool down a bit, or smoke a little weed, or whatever. It's just nice to take a break.
Since everything that involves the band leaving the stage and then coming back is generally called an "encore", unless the band specifically bills that they'll be "playing two sets" (which almost never happens), it's silly to complain about all encores since, in my experience, a large majority of them are actually "set breaks".
Liz:
I love encores. Sure they are kind of pointless and maybe the band should just stay on stage and play some more stuff, but generally the little break towards the end makes the show seem longer.

I love Tim Kinsella. Sure, he's a shitty singer, but I love everything he has anything to do with. Except The Promise Ring. I can't seem to get into them.
Anywho, I would pay to see Dinosaur Jr. Despite his lack of energy live, J Mascis is one of my guitar gods.
