--- Quote from: zerodrone on 04 Dec 2007, 17:29 ---if 50 million people enjoy an album, it can not logically be "bad"

--- End quote ---

This is a logical fallacy right here folks. Learn to recognize it.

--- End quote ---

You can't apply that kind of logical fallacy rule to the completely illogical realm of artistic taste.

If 50 million people believe that 1 + 1 =3, they can still be wrong because there are rules about how math works.

If 50 million people genuinely enjoy an Eagles album, they can not be wrong because there are no provable rules about what constitutes "good" or "bad" music.

Johnny C:
No, you totally can. The fallacy is, "X people believe Y is true. Therefore, Y is true." Write it now as, "Fifty million people believe The Eagles don't suck. Therefore, The Eagles don't suck." See?

For The Eagles to not suck, you'd have to have a more compelling argument than "a lot of people like them," because that actually has nothing to do with whether they suck or not. That's the basis of the fallacy.

If you want, I can keep on applying this to different things which you can't really be truly objective about. For example, religion!

Christianity is the largest religion in the world. Therefore, the Christian God and Jesus must totally exist, right? I mean, two billion people believe in them!

I'm personally a Christian but if you try to tell me I'm right because of how many people agree with me I'll probably gently correct you.

Jackie Blue:
You're talking Moon Language, man.

I'm not saying that The Eagles are good because 50 million people like them.  I'm saying that there is no way to say whether they are good or not at all, but if they make 50 million people happy, they are doing something right.  To claim otherwise is to be a hipster snob.

The Christian thing is a great example of why you're shooting yourself in the foot.  Your implication is that what I'm saying equates to "If 50 million people believe God exists, then he must".  That's not what I'm saying.  I'm not speaking in terms of objective reality.  I don't believe in objective reality, and I certainly don't believe in it for the purposes of art.  What I'm saying would be more akin to "If 50 million people believe God exists, that belief must be doing something for them".

No matter how much I think, believe or feel that The Eagles suck, I can't say that they actually do because it's a matter of opinion and clearly a lot of people think The Eagles don't suck and I have no basis for, or inclination toward, telling them that they're "wrong".

Johnny C:
So let me see if I have this straight - the crux of your argument is that fifty million people own The Eagles' greatest hits because they like them?

I think you're muddling the hell out of what you're saying by including what I just emphasized there. Prior to the bold your argument is fairly straightforward but then you seem to contradict yourself. The part in bold is what I'm arguing against - just cause a bunch of people don't think they suck doesn't mean they don't suck.
