So...wait. The writers wanted to end it at 6, NBC made them do season 7, and now there's going to be an eighth season?

Bill Lawrence is on record saying there was always plans for seven seasons.  This is where is gets to be a pain in the butt:

The writer's strike fucked with how it was going to end.

And NBC wouldn't front them the extra four or five episodes they needed to actualy end it. 

So, ABC picks it up for 18 episodes, aka Season 8.

look out! Ninjas!:
Because there is no way in hell a TV network would pick up four or five half-hour episodes so they've decided to fuck it all up. Bastards.
