It's funny, I realized how out-of-step I've become when probably my favourite record this year only appeared on one year-end list, and even then only in second place.

I know a lot of people hate them, but if Gallows herald some kind of hardcore punk scene that takes over the charts I would feel warm and fuzzy inside. Of course, for anyone who hates it, they comfort themselves that aside from Gallows, they'll all split up by 2009 having released one 12" and an EP no one can find.

An M83 "dance" track. Hmm. It's still great, and I'll be interested to see how the album turns out, but after the sheer awesomeness of Before the Dawn Heals Us I really don't want to be let down.

If it gets the Daft Punk kids into M83, though, that would be a good thing.

Kieffer, indie isn't a genre. There is no defining feature that unites all indie bands other than the fact they claim to be independent. You are ridiculous.

While he's making it shit poorly, Kieffer has a point. Like it or not, "Indie Rock" no longer has much at all to do with business practice in the same way that Emo no longer has anything to do with hardcore. The words no longer mean what they once did or what their derivation is because the popular use of the language has changed it, and that's something we may have to live with. Kind of like how all rock produced today is called 'alternative', it's a word that no longer really means what it did before because companies saw a way to make money off of the title and changed what it means.

Actually, I heard some non-'alternative' rock the other day.
It all manages to sound exactly like Led Zeppelin or The Who.

I feel like 'indie' means whatever you want it to mean, because it's so poorly defined. So for IO and Kieffer, it defines a sound, but for Spinless, it defines their claim to be independent. It's a rather undescriptive term, but my friends look at me funny when I use more descriptive ones.

Nope, sorry. If "indie" is a genre, what does it sound like? Is "indie rock" the genre that consists of the twelve bands that sound vaguely similar to Dead Cab For Cutie? Is it the ten bands who live in Canada and have all at some point had Kevin Drew crash on their couch? Is it Xiu Xiu? Is it retro-Springsteen Hold Steady type stuff? Is it future-backwards rave-up/pop like The Pipettes, Annie and The Go! Team? Do you think Mogwai sound similar enough to Feist to usefully be included in the same "genre"? Come on, now.

La Quiete, Feint, What Price Wonderland, Mock Heroic, Funeral Diner, Louise Cyphre, Raein, Amanda Woodward, Daitro... I could go on for ages, there are far more emo bands now than there were when the term was coined. The problem with saying 'emo no longer means what it did' is that it simply isn't true, there are thousands of bands worldwide playing emo and referring to themselves as such. You can say it now also has an additional alternative usage but to claim that the previous meaning of the term is somehow redundant is just flat-out wrong.

While I'm definitely not a fan of the labels and companies that have polluted the music scene with a lot of derivative crap, I don't believe it's right to lay the blame completely at their door. What about the number of bands themselves, with no company attached, or with no company influence, who jump on the label bandwagon?

Indie originally referred to having an independent label, right? So how can all bands that choose to go on indie labels have the same sound?

Although, maybe the definition is becoming the idea of lo-fi, slightly electronic, casual rock.

(I still say octopi, and say "irony" only in it's original definition, though).

Just to go back to the original point (As opposed to arguing about genre names, when all they are is something helpful to either describe yours or other music taste/find things in record stores)

I've noticed a couple of trends amongst my friends who play music in the past couple of years:

All the grind-ey botch or 31G bands are now playing pelican/isis type riff rock

All the Gravvy Train!!! bands are DJing dubstep

All the posthardcoreemowhateveryouwanttocallit bands are playing, well pelican/isis type riff rock

Maybe not next big thing, but there is a lot of riff rock round my parts, a lot of prog influence stuff, s'all a bit 70's and long winded for me....

Also not enough hard and fast and not enough folk that does have a laptop involved somewhere.

Has anyone else noticed trends in the kinds of music friends and peers are making? x

Yes. The music that any friend I have ever had has made has always sounded like the flavour of the week, with covers of songs from that week's top 40 entering their set list. It's a crying shame!

I do understand how 'indie rock' is a useful blanket term for bands that are often a little harder to place, but the extent to which it is being used these days is pretty ridiculous. 'Indie' can be used to describe that Chapel Hill sound back in the 90s, but can also be used to describe this poppy and upbeat thing that canada has going on. How about we start using place names and time spans in our music genre descriptions?

Actually, I just realised. I do not find the 'p' in 'description' all that aesthetically pleasing, so I shall be typing it without the 'p' for the calendar week.

See, that's what confuses me - what you just said there is precisely why I think "indie" is NOT a useful blanket term. Even nebulous terms such as "rock" and "pop" are more useful than "indie". Example:

"So what kind of band are The Hold Steady?"
"Oh, they're a rock band."
"And what kind of band are the Stars?"
"Oh, they're a pop band."

I think that's better than saying they're both "indie".

And if someone doesn't know what those terms mean, just say "Polvo is nerdy rock" and "Fugazi is nerdy punk".

Oh god yes, that sounds exactly like everyone I know as well, there's too much riff obsession by far. It was interesting at first but now it's just tiresome, too many bands doing the same thing and none of them getting remotely near the places Snowblood managed to take it. I miss the days when everyone wanted to sound like they were on Fat Wreck instead of Hydrahead, at least then musical skill wasn't put on a pedestal and there were more fun songs.

I don't know where you live, but a lot of local indie bands here in Knoxville have a heavy garage-trash-blues influence. The blues will never go out of style.
