Oh man, my mistake. I meant "pre" not "post." I'm tired methinks. I think the album bears more listens before I decide for sure how I feel about it but I feel like it lacks the emotional power and intensity of their earlier work which was initially one of the big draws for me. Somehow the songs seem like nice rock songs now and, while certainly really good ones, that's not what I love about the band.

Alright, I've changed my mind. The new Ryan Adams makes it to my top 10. But it's still not close to his best.

kinda coinciding with what's gonna be my first visit to Gainesville's The Fest, a lot of my top 10 so far is punk rock of the gruff, raw-throated variety (i guess the amount of it i've listened to this year has played a part in persuading me to part with the cash to go over the US for The Fest).  i had a shortlist of about 40 albums, and although maybe 10 or so were fairly easy to get rid of, it was real fucking hard to get it down to ten.  so here's my top ten of 2008 so far, plus a few special mentions that were oh-so-close to making the ten:

1. Glass and Ashes - "Glass and Ashes"
2. Ginger - "Market Harbour"
3. Dillinger Four - "C I V I L W A R"
4. Banner Pilot - "Resignation Day"
5. Off With Their Heads - "From the Bottom"
6. The Gaslight Anthem "The '59 Sound"
7. Less Than Jake - "GNV FLA"
8. Fighting With Wire - "Man Vs. Monster"
9. Anchor Arms - "Cold Blooded"
10. The Riot Before - "Fists Buried In Pockets"

Special Mentions:

Bridge and Tunnel - "East/West"
Clouds - "We Are Above You"
The Night Marchers - "See You In Magic"
Ninja Gun - "Restless Rubes"
Pendulum - "In Silico"
Rise Against - "Appeal to Reason"
Torche - "Meanderthal"

I fell kind of bad because I always mention something Skinny Puppy related here, but there need be made mention of the 2nd edition of the Subconcious Studios series From the Vault.  They rock hard and are all at the top of my list.
Included are:

Doubting Thomas - The Infidel Special Edition Double CD (includes The Infidel, Father Don't Cry and 6 unreleased tracks)
Download - Furnace Special Edition Double CD (with Furnace and second disc of the original Furnace jam sessions)
Download - fIxEr
PlaTEAU - Music for Grassbars 2xLP (10 Year Special Edition)
The Tear Garden - The Secret Experiment
Hilt - Patsy/Minoot Bowl Dropped The Ball
Skinny Puppy - Back and Forth Volume Seven
Subconscious Studios - Rare (compilation)

The new Mountain Goats E.P. Satanic Messiah is really good. Like, I know it's only got four songs, but after the first listen to it I seriously think it might be the best Mountain Goats recording since the Sunset Tree.

Oh hey, you can download it! http://satanicmessiah.com/

As most albums for the year are already out and most reputable music sources are doing the same, i'll post my finalised top 10 for the year:

1. The Tallest Man On Earth – Shallow Grave
2. Ladyhawke – Ladyhawke
3. The Mountain Goats – Heretic Pride
4. Frightened Rabbit – The Midnight Organ Fight
5. El Guincho – Alegranza
6. Coconot – Cosa Astral
7. Horse Feathers – House With No Home
8. Algernon Cadwallader – Some Kind Of Cadwallader
9. Johnny Foreigner – Waited Up ‘Til It Was Light
10. Mogwai – The Hawk Is Howling

Honourable Mentions
Does it Offend You, Yeah? -You Have No Idea What You're Getting Yourself In To
The Mountain Goats – Satanic Messiah EP (Sadly, too short to make it into top 10)
Ben Folds – Way To Normal
Vetusta Morla – Un Día En El Mundo
Alaska In Winter – Holiday
The Weepies – Hideaway

Sidenote: El Guicho – Alegranza was released Oct 2008 outside of it’s native Spain (possibly there also). However, there was another album, Foliás, released before Alegranza in 2007.

i've thought about it many times, why isn't crystal castles' debut on anyone's list?
respectfully, it was a great release, despite the stealing.

& to counter that respectfulness, i will post my list in a few weeks. i always wait for December.

If I plagiarise for an assignment, even if I only steal a little bit, I fail with an absolute zero, and if I ever try to be admitted to legal practice (law student) it'll be called up as evidence that I'm not fit to practice law.

Fuck Crystal Castles.

Yeah. Their album hadn't much plagarizing apart from some sampled drums. Which I don't have a problem with. How about Girl Talk? Ha! Using an entire track hardly edited as the basis for a song, without credit, is kind of lame though, and the worst was the stuff about the Madonna drawing.

Anyway, even though they're douchebags you shouldn't let that affect your judgment of their music because plenty of famous people making great music are assholes. That being said, I don't rate their album that highly, it's ok, has some great tracks on it but doesn't work that well as a whole IMO.

Yeah, I couldn't stand the Crystal Castles album. Really grates by the time you're about halfway in, and the album doesn't hit me personally as being much more than overhyped ravey music that happens to be "in" at the moment. It's quite likely that it will just go on the pile of albums that are met with little more than a few eye-rolls in a couple of years, thanks to a fickle audience.

I could be totally missing the point of course - not trying to get on the fans' ire in the least. It just didn't do much for me.

Anyway, even though they're douchebags you shouldn't let that affect your judgment of their music because plenty of famous people making great music are assholes.

But buying their music sends them money and/or gets them recommissioned to create another album, which rewards musical theft and encourages them to do it more. However, on the other hand, one could argue that their music should appreciated in it's own right, and not in relation to the person who made it.

Would you consider listening to, say, Burzum, to be acceptable (one might argue that, by going to prison, he has already been punished for his crimes)? What about Charles Manson?

really?  personally, i need to feel at least SOME kind of emotional connection to music to truly enjoy it, and several bands i otherwise liked have had the listening experience soured for me when i've found out they're monumental bastards.  this isn't to say that any artist who does the slightest thing that irks me will be cast out of my collection, it's got to be something pretty big or a constant display of asshole-ism.  and even then, i'll still listen now and again, but i just don't enjoy it as much.

So, what the fuck, the 1900s have a new album out now? And I had no idea about it until today when they just announced it. What the hell. Who puts out an album in late November.

Anyway I need to find this somehow

Regarding top of 2008 lists, I'm not sure if I can make one! I think I'll just give awards out to albums.

I forgot, the new Tarentel album, "Live Edits: Italy/Switzerland" also deserves a spot on my list somewhere. Not too sure where though or what I'll bump off completely since, the more I think about, the more I think the albums I listed will be on my final list, albeit with a possibly mixed up order. Maybe I'll avoid that problem and just do a top 20.

EDIT: The new Wolf Parade might actually have to be on my list too. I dunno...it's just such a fun album and the final track alone pretty much makes it worthy of consideration.

One thing that puzzles me about these charts is how people rate Fleet Foxes so highly. To me, there is one good song on the album, 'White Winter Hymnal', and everything else strives to be that song and falls pretty far short.

Also, MGMT are pretty overrated (unless you like hallucinogenics then maybe it really is better).

MGMT have a couple good songs ('Time to Pretend,' 'Kids' - I personally don't get 'Electric Feel') but the album itself is a vast disappointment after the first couple of listens.

I agree that Fleet Foxes only really have one good song, but for me it was 'Your Protector'

Man, everybody loves that new Why? album and I admit it's pretty good but I can't help listening to it and thinking to myself that Hood did all this so much better half a decade ago.

do you want me to fight you? is that what you want?

admittedly i've never heard of Hood, but goddamn the new Why? album is so jam-packed full of clever and witty lyrics that i'm surprised they can fit it all onto a cd. shit.
