The Sun City Girls are one of the best bands ever.  They have a fuckton of releases.

glowingraw dot blogspot dot com has pretty much all of their best studio releases, as well as a lot of other cool stuff.  I'd start with Grotto of Miracles and Torch of the Mystics, then get the weirder stuff like Dante's Disneyland Inferno and 330,003 Crossdressers.

Re: Narrow Stairs: As I've said before, "Talking Bird" really kills the whole album for me (and, now that I have the actual album to sit and listen to all at once, so does the subsequent "You Can Do Better Than Me"). If it just jumped from "Cath" to "Grapevine Fires" I would think about three times as much of the album as I do now. But seriously, what were they thinking? "Talking Bird" is an awful awful song, worse than anything off Plans, and to follow it up with "You Can Do Better," which is barely a song at all? For shame, guys. For shame.

Meshuggah's new album is really damned good.

Yes. It's not going to be something I listen to often - Meshuggah is hardly easy listening, but when I do feel like it, it blows me away.

I am apprehensive as to whether the new Deerhunter will totally fucking slay, like Cryptograms did, or will be a weird turn-off, based on the rumors I've heard.

I listened to the last Bauhaus album, "Go Away White", something akin to four or five times today.  Granted, it seemed a little less involved than their other material, but I thought it retained the sound and the feel they'd cultivated since day one and that it was a nice enough way to go out.  Wish I could see 'em live again, though.

Really?  I don't like the new Bauhaus at all.  It's basically a Peter Murphy solo album, and not a good one at that.  It has none of the charm of their early material to me, and is nowhere near as good as Love and Rockets.  Too much midtempo rock with Pe-tah warbling.

No, I agree, that's a spot on analysis.  I suppose its the mystique of the last album complex.  That said, I do enjoy it all the same, regardless.  I'm just one of those people that find it difficult to find fault and to generally enjoy even their favorite band's descent into the mundane.  Besdies, the only other Bauhaus album I still have is Press Eject and Give Me the Tape, the live one.  I lost all the others when my hard drive crashed so I'm not as in touch as I might be with the older material.

The new Shearwater album, "Rook" is sharing in the mediaf!re thread and it's incredible. My favorite album of their's to date, I do believe. It's fantastically rocking and, based upon a couple listens, blows "The Stage Names" away.

Oh but it is. True, I tend to wax hyperbolic. It's a bad habit. I get easily carried away. But this is coming from someone who doesn't like Shearwater all that much and who thinks that, previous to these latest releases, if put into a ring to duke it out, OR would kill its more softspoken offspring. This release shakes things up, however. "Rooks" is more intense and, I think, more powerful than previous Shearwater releases. "The Stage Names" was good but underwhelming, especially when it comes to such tracks as the absolutely abysmal "Savannah Smiles." No, I avoid drugs, instead killing my ear drums with incessant music blasted through headphones and I would take "Rooks" over the "The Stage Names" any day.

Right now I'm spinning the new Opeth, Watershed. I'm only on the second track but I'm somewhat unimpressed so far. It doesn't feel as nearly as good as their earlier stuff (which has kinda been true for a while), and it already feels they are even more like Porcupine Tree this time. I'll say more when I finish it.

Guys, can we please just not compare Shearwater and Okkervil River? They no longer share any band members so there really is no basis for that comparison. Also, it's not like they're trying to make the same style of music. The two bands are vastly, vastly different.

Plus, I talked to Kim (of Shearwater) after their show in Fargo on Wednesday and she shared that they are all a little tired of the comparison. So really, there's no point.

I posted "Rook" because it is a gorgeous album and incredibly well written. I will not compare it to "The Stage Names" or any other Okkervil River album because there is no reason to do so. So please, just enjoy each of them for their own genius.

Nah, don't worry about it. We discussed it for a bit and she said that they don't mind because there once was a connection, but now that the two bands are completely independent, they want to establish themselves as their own band.

As to not pollute Gabbly any more: I hate the new Opeth album. It's like they took everything I hated from Ghost Reveries and took some Between the Buried and Me to add to their sound to further their evil quest to become Porcupine Tree. AHHHHHH!

hmm, i liked watershed. after watching them do Heir Apparent  live i was hooked. i do thing they could have done with some more heavy songs, sthough Burden and Coil were excellent clean songs. the melody at the end of Heir is awesome

That sentence made no fucking sense whatsoever.

(and really if anything it's Porcupine Tree that are becoming more like Opeth than the other way round... not that there's anything wrong with that)

No, I know what he's talking about. I pointed it out way back in this thread before the album was release - the two bands are trying to switch places.

But Watershed is much less PT-ish than Ghost Reveries. It's pretty good, it reminds me of their earlier stuff in places.

Fine with me; I love Opeth but I've always preferred Porcupine Tree by miles. Ghost Reveries is the most advanced and musical album they ever did. Still Life is one of my favorite albums, but I can only listen to it sparingly. Their newer albums are much more, all around.

I actually just saw Opeth live less than a week ago, and they were horribly underwhelming. The most entertaining part was when Mikael talked between songs. He speaks in very gentlemanly tones, and has an insanely deep voice.

Sorry if I came off as blathering, I just am really upset that this record wasn't good at all. I thought is more Porcupine Tree-esque in that there was even more prog in there then there was before. Plus, its more like Between the Buried and Me than Porcupine Tree. Which makes more sense cause I kinda enjoy Porcupine Tree.

God I sound so disjointed.

Believe it or not, the new Sigur Ros is really spectacular. Probably the best thing I've heard all year. It also might be some of their best work ever. It definitely won't bore like AB and () were wont to often do. It's accessible but beautifully done. It trumps everything else on my 'best of 08' list. I'm so relieved!

I've been listening to what I believe is Chemtrails by Beck. It's fantastic, and now I'm really excited about his new album. Think The Wizard Turns On... by the Flaming Lips and The Information from his previous album, now you pretty much have it.

The new Venetian Snares record is going up on my top ten for the year. And, given that he likes to put out a lot of music in a short period of time, I might see another of his headed for my list.

There's a Lazrtag remix of the Crystals Castles VS HEALTH version out there though, confusion might start to occur.

So uh, the new LITE album, Phantasia, is fucking fantastic. It has a bit of a heavier edge to it and a slight bit of post-rock injected into their music. It is really good stuff and I recommended it to everyone who digs math-rock.

I will probably not upload it into the mediafire thread because the download will be taken down in a few days.

So, turns out the new Silver Jews album, Look Out Mountain, Look Out Sea, is a real grower. Just like the last one, really: I was a bit underwhelmed by Tanglewood Numbers at first, and now I really love it. I can already feel the same thing happening with Lookout. Unlike a lot of people I really like Cassie Berman being in the band, and on the new album she's used really well: I can't imagine "Suffering Jukebox" being half as affecting with Stephen Malkmus singing the chorus, I think a female voice works really well with Dave Berman's music.

EDIT: Of course, I'm a die hard Silver Jews fan. I don't think I'd suggest this album as a starting point for anyone wanting to get into the band.

So Laura has a new EP, yes maybe no, out on July first for us US kiddies and is selling it at their shows. They have a song from it on their myspace. It sounds heavier than anything they have done before, and it's pretty good.

Click this thing to hear that song.

Edit: After a few listens I really like this song. Take that for what you will.

Edit Edit: It's apparently leaked so I'll download it tomorrow and give you all my 2 cents on it.

It was like eating a cookie and then making me want a whole cake. In fact, I think I'll go "eat some cake" right now.

I find cakes and cookies exceedingly dissimilar.

Also, on the first listen of the HEALTH // DISCO album, I do not like it. This is probably heresy, but eh. It's not a hate, it just doesn't do anything for me. I'm thinking of trying it again at some point, but I'm not sure it's worth it.

As for the new Silver Jews. The last album, at first, was a take it or leave it. I took it, and let it grow, and now I love it. I think this album is similar enough that on my first listen, I just loved it automatically.

7. Bonnie "Prince" Billy - Lie Down in the Light
8. Beach House - Devotion
9. Sian Alice Group - 59.59
10. Fuck Buttons - Street Horrrsing

P.S. The new Silver Jews is pretty good, but with every release other than American Water I just find myself thinking, "Well, fuck. I'd much rather be listening to American Water right now." That was especially true for Lookout Mountain. It was like eating a cookie and then making me want a whole cake. In fact, I think I'll go "eat some cake" right now.

I agree with a lot of this. Not all, but enough to make me quote the list and say so.

The new Colour Haze is easily the best thing I've heard all year.  So, so, so good.
Same here, their best so far imo, and that's saying quite something. Doubt anything can top it this year.

It's missing the Los Campesinos! LP, therefore it is wrong.
