That some friends are planning a mini vacation to Canada and since there's a possibility you want to go, you need to get a passport? I dunno. I got mine because I was planning on taking a class* that involved a trip to Germany and the study abroad program had a passport day on campus. Maybe you could say something like that is something going on? If you feel uncomfortable about the truth, just leave out some details or make it as close to the truth as possible. I'm just going to say that I'm done with school and I want to travel and as I know people going to Toronto those dates, I'm going to actually use my passport for once and go with them, which is pretty much true.

*The class was to get credit for spending 10 days in Germany. This was sponsored by the German dept. and as I'd taken some German classes, I thought this would have been cool. But I ended up not affording it (long story because of parent), but I got a passport before I knew I wouldn't be able to.

Slick:
Is 'just because' a good enough reason to get a passport? In case you do go abroad ever, it'd be nice to have it ready for you so it's one less thing to worry about later. I mean, they're good for years and it can't really hurt to get one.

BobJoeJim:
Considering how long it can potentially take to get a passport these days, I think getting one "just because" is entirely valid.  I've actually considered doing it myself.

McTaggart:
Passports are also useful as ID. You could say that you're getting a passport so that when you need id for things like banks and whatever you don't need to go through the effort of getting your birth certificate.

BrittanyMarie:
Liz, due to financial problems coming up, I won't be going (and if I was going anywhere it probably would be to sxsw since I have friends playing, also i <3 live music)

You could just... not tell them! Then if/when they do find out you went, be all nonchalant about it. "Oh yeah, I traveled to Toronto with some friends. Didn't I mention that?" It's what college kids do! I do all the time! "What? No, I can't come home right now; I'm in Chicago. Why? There were some bands I wanted to see."
