I know a lot of people who were Flaming Lips fans way before The Soft Bulletin who all agree with me that their older material is much stronger.

Granted, most younger people whose first exposure to the Lips was Soft Bulletin hold it up as some kind of industry standard of what Jesus himself sounds like, but some of us liked it when the Lips were more psychedelic, more noisy, had better lyrics, and were on more drugs.

If I want to listen to post-Zaireeka Flaming Lips sounding music, I'll listen to post-Boces Mercury Rev, as they did it better.

Johnny C:
I don't think there's a Flaming Lips album out there that isn't quite good. You're all fools.

danananananananananananannanananananananananana Go TEEEAAM!

Spinless:
It's too late for my advice, but here it is anyway!
Differing music taste can be a real killer in some situations. Just don't play anything of your own, pretend to like everything they like, when they press you for details on what you listen to, just say 'oh, you'll hate it, it's not important.'

That said, this is a recommendation thread, so I'm just gonna shoot at Neil Young.

--- Quote from: zerodrone on 17 Jan 2008, 02:00 ---The Flaming Lips have many depressing songs.  "Jesus Shootin' Heroin", "Felt Good To Burn", "The Abandoned Hospital Ship", "Godzilla Flick", "Love Yer Brain", "Stand In Line", "You Have to Be Joking (Autopsy of the Devil's Brain", "They Punctured My Yolk"...

You do realise they made albums before The Soft Bulletin right?  Some of us would even say that everything before that album is their best work.

No, I've been asleep under a rock for the past 20 years (actually I wasn't born 20 years ago, but let that rest). Yes I do recognize that they have made a lot of albums prior to The Soft Bulletin and the happy-songs-statement was obviously an exaggeration. "Do You Realize???" is perhaps the most depressing song ever made. But! I'm almost sure that the author of the thread listens primarily to Yoshimi and The Soft Bulletin and/or War of the Mystics since they are the most popular of their entire body of work. I haven't heard the older work either, because it's pretty hard to get a hold of, but sure, I know a lot of you prefers most popular indie-bands' older work to their newer (Modest Mouse, Arcade Fire, Black Heart Procession and I could go on).
