Heima
« on: 03 Oct 2007, 16:45 »

So is anyone going to the U.S. premier screening of the new Sigur Ros Icelandic tour documentary, "Heima"? I'm going to the second showing (at midnight) on the 6th at some venue in NYC (I forget where at the moment). Sigur Ros will be playing a three song acoustic set, then the movie (which I've heard is truly amazing) is being shown, and then there's a Q&A with the band and the director of the documentary. This is really a dream come true for me so needless to say I'm unbelievably excited. Anyone else manage to snag tickets for one of the two screenings?

Where the hell are you getting your information? I was just on sigur-ros.co.uk and it only mentions an LA show.

Man, I will totally see it if it comes to Chicago. Sigur Ros are pretty much my favourite band ever. I can remember the exact instant I first heard them. (Not the day, just exactly what I was doing.)

Wow, I wish I had insider info. This, however, is just a little before the info on the LA show on the website:
" second new york screening
2 October 2007
due to high demand there will be a second screening of “heima” in new york on october 6th. this will be a midnight show with a brief acoustic performance by the band prior to the screening. tickets go on sale wednesday october 3rd at 12 pm (est) on ticketmaster (limit of 2 tickets per person). there will also be some tickets for sale at the french institute box office the same day, while supplies last. "

I'm assuming you've seen the trailer for the documentary. It looks absolutely amazing and based upon some early reviews I've heard, it's really beautiful. I already ordered the double dvd with the extra disc of all the songs on the documentary live and in full and a 140 page book of photos from the tour. Make sure you get on ticketmaster early to get those tickets though. The first NYC show sold out in a matter of minutes and the second sold out in about an hour. I'll post after the screening to let you know how utterly fucking blown away I am (I'm also an enormous fan so this is huge).

Nice! (I obviously missed that note about the NYC shows.) I hope it is an incredible show.

Yes, I've seen the trailer - the movie looks phenomenal. My next big vacation is going to be to Iceland purely due to the photos they posted during their tour. I bought the limited-edition In a Frozen Sea, but I haven't preordered the DVD yet. (I don't think - I may have when I was drunk one night and don't remember.)

Have fun!

Well I saw the show, got home at 7 in the morning, woke up a few hours later, and have not stopped thinking about how unbelievably amazing it was all day. Sigur Ros started things off with a short, three song acoustic set. Kjartan played on a baby grand Steinway, Jonsi had his beautiful acoustic guitar, Georg had a nice acoustic bass and Orri had a very simple drum setup featuring only a bass drum, one snare, one cymbal and one hi-hat which he played with regular drum sticks, wire brushes and wrapped mallets which he used interchangeably (switching mid song). They started the set with 'Untitled #4' ('Njósnavélin') from ( ), then played a completely new song (never played live before), and finished with the title track from Agaetis Byrjun. They sat the whole time and, after modest bows in front of a standing ovation, moved off stage. The set, although quite short, was insanely beautiful and moving and because the venue was rather tiny and I was extremely close to the stage, really intimate as well. I feel like it was a once in a lifetime opportunity to see them play so minimally since they (sadly) only play the big venues when on tour.

On to the movie: I was in stunned silence for several minutes after it ended. Everything, even the final credits, was so incredibly beautiful and well done that it shocked me. The footage from various shows was truly amazing, the landscapes were breathtaking and hearing the band speak about themselves and their music, even if it was only in small doses, was amazingly insightful and really great to hear. This is easily the most powerful, beautiful, and well executed rock documentary I have ever had the good fortune to see. Not to mention it was the sold out U.S. premier and was presented on a huge screen in high definition with very, very loud 5.1 surround sound, all of which made the experience even more special, memorable, and intense. If this is screening anywhere near any of you, even if you haven't listened to/don't really like Sigur Ros, you'll be doing yourself a huge favor by seeing this. It's funny, gorgeous, intensely powerful, insightful and is technically amazingly well done as well. This was well worth missing the Randal's Island show and waiting in line five hours for and I would say that only about a select few things. This surpassed my expectations in so many ways and is surely something I won't forget. An amazing experience!

I envy you sosososososo much. This sounds really great. I loved the trailer, and have only heard the best things about it. Can't wait till it reaches Australia.

The trailer for this looked really amazing. Can't wait for the movie and the LP. If the DVD is even half as good as their live show it'll be great times. Despite my going on about the greatness of metal and whatnot, I love this band. Really hoping they'll do some shows/screenings in Australia, but it's unlikely that they'll be doing stuff in Perth. Oh well! The DVD will be amazing anyway.

I bought the DVD. It comes with a fat book of pictures of Iceland. Iceland is pretty. I am a satisfied customer.

Oh and there's two discs of Sigur Ros I guess.

:-D

I'd imagine right now they're working on a new album. After that.

Note to self: if they play Boston, GO THIS TIME.

Just saw this. Have to say, if I ever get my hand on the editor I might just wring his neck. Really, man, decaf.

For the most part, though, it was beautiful. Loved it.

I agree with you on that for a very small handful of scenes. It's nothing compared to how shoddy the MONO DVD is. Talk about a let-down.
