I have a pair of Converse from before they were sold to Nike and now two pairs from after. The first pair held up with only tiny holes near my small toe and have stayed this way for the past 5 years. The older pair from post-Nike are the same, but in slightly better shape as they are only 4 years old and I wore the other pair a lot more originally. (The last pair is brand new, so who knows what'll happen to them.) But then again, one of my friends got a pair of post-Nike Chucks around the time I got my second pair and hers lasted less than a year, when the whole inside of one shoe decided to separate from the sole. She got another pair later on and they didn't do that, but did get sizable holes where the cloth met the sole. But she has wider feet than I do and chucks are pretty narrow shoes.

(Photobucket is being a jerk, or I'd post the new ones.)

They are from Payless! I work there and almost bought a pair for myself but ended up going for some cheaper ones. Because I am broke.

I think I got them on sale for like $16 or something ridiculous like that.  I was so excited.  I spent $50 that day and got 4 pairs of boots.

Liz:
I got a pair for $8 because I got to use my employee discount. That was a great day.

Sweatshop-free, Made in union workshops, and most importantly actually much better made and don't fucking fall apart after six months wear.

I wish! Those things are like 40-some bucks. I remember getting so excited about finding a completely vegan-American made shoe site only to realize it was upwards of 50+ dollars.
Thrift store: 1-5 dollars. I'm a grad student. I'm surprised I'm not wearing paper bags right now.
