Broken Social Scene
« on: 09 Apr 2008, 18:39 »

Ok, so I'm going to see Broken Social Scene in May.

However, I've only heard their self titled album.
I think its absolutely brilliant, so I can't wait to see them now.

But, I'd like to have heard a lot more by the time I do get to see them

Can anybody point me in the right direction?
Which are the essential tracks?
Should I work my way through from the beggining?

Any advice is much appreciated.

Well Ben I did use wiki, and that listen 4 full length albums.

I also thought that asking on a music forum would be quite appropriate.

Cheers for the advice.

Download/buy the entire discography.

All of their stuff is worth a listen. But if you're on a budget, I'd just pick up You Forgot It In People. Possibly their best album.

As for their best songs, in my opinion(no particular order):
Almost Crimes(Radio Kills remix and Acoustic)
Cause = Time
Stars and Sons
KC Accidental
It's All Gonna Break
hHallmark
Time = Cause
Major Label Debut (Especially the fast version)
Super Connected

Thing with the BSS, is that 1 is a self-released post-rock album(Feel Good Lost), and the other(Bee Hives) is just B-Sides, and generally not ground-breaking stuff. Stuff you'll hear at live shows, I'd wager would generally be from You Forgot It In People and Broken Social Scene.

YFIP is their defining/most popular album so far, i'd say listening to that before you go is a high priority!

I'd imagine they're also going to play quite a lot off Kevin Drew's Spirit If . . . album from last year, which was a Broken Social Scene album in all but name. Certainly they did when I saw them a couple of months ago. I'd say it's almost certain they'll play "Fucked Up Kid".

However, more than a lot of bands, I think it's possible to immensely enjoy a Broken Social Scene gig without knowing a lot of their music.

I agree with all the YFGIiP love.  It is seriously fucking gorgeous.  Also, get Bee Hives.  I have not heard much of their first album, though.

I'd imagine they're also going to play quite a lot off Kevin Drew's Spirit If . . . album from last year, which was a Broken Social Scene album in all but name.

Getting Spirit If... may be a good idea.  You might also like to check out some Feist.  As it is Leslie Feist's solo stuff after all.

One more thing.  If you can find it (unlike me), get one of the two K.C. Accidental albums.

Seriously, if anyone has these, please don't hesitate to put it up on the Mediafire thread.  I would be eternally grateful.

Broken Social Scene are Awesome, if listened to on CD or Live, they're great. You Forgot in People is probally the best, but Beehive is a good one aswell, there's no going wrong.
They're the Walrus to my KookooCaChoo.

Somehow, on my copy of their self-titled, "It's All Gonna Break" is a bootleg track of them playing live.  Is it really like that one the official release, or did I just get sort-of-lucky because someone was too lazy to search for the studio version?

I suggest getting into this band 2 years ago.

Also the EP that I can never remember the name of that came with some copies of the S/T has Major Label Debut(fast) on it. I think it's To Be You and Me EP?

Feel Good Lost is their best album in my opinion, but I have to go with everyone else in saying get YFIP to hear what they will actually play. I wish I'd seen one of the early shows where they performed stuff from FGL, that would have been great.

OP, where are you seeing them? They're playing in Luxembourg in May, and the only reason I'm not going back up to see them/visit old friends is because I have my own show here the next day.

Thanks very much for all the help.

I'm a poor student at the minute, so I will buy the albums when I have money.

Until then, the mediafire thread will be my new best friend

this band has so many members, and anything any of those members touches, usually turns to gold.
stars, most serene republic, feist, kevin drew, jason collet, k.c. accidental, amy milan, valley of the giants, memphis etc. are all money
hell, anything off of arts-crafts records

i get to see a bunch of them tomorrow.  last day of classes concert featuring stars, the most serene republic.  as well as wintersleep.

I had the chance to see stars last month but didnt go.

Am I right in thinking that Emily Haines is a former member of BSS?

I saw BSS at a festival and there set was ruined by fucking Clap Your hands... playing for about half an hour too long so they only played ike 5 or 6 songs and the sound crew did a really rushed shitty job so it wasn't great. But they were still really good, if not a little put off. Feist joined them at one point which kicked ass. One of my major disappointments in recent memory was missing there side show a few days later (the one Inlander attended) because work got in the way. I was quite upset.

Anyway, YFIIP saved me in yr.12.

She still is a member. BSS don't have many former members, just members that do or do not recourd/tour with them due to their active status with other projects at the moment .

Seconded.

Honestly, I went into a BSS gig as a not-massive-fan and have not listened to them much since. But they are intense live. The show is all you need. Don't feel you need to 'read up' beforehand. Just sit/stand back and enjoy. :)

I'm probably in a really small minority here but I think it would be frickin awesome if Kevin Drew and Brendan Canning toured playing 'Feel Good Lost' stuff or if Kevin Drew and Charles Spearin toured playing KC Accidental material. I love the two KCA albums and 'Feel Good Lost' is very lovely indeed.

Pretty much no chance of that happening these days.  Metric and Feist on their own are bigger draws than BSS.  Next time Feist is coming through Montreal, apparently she is playing a hockey stadium.  Amy Millan does sing with them occasionally these days though.  She did when they were in Montreal in December anyhow.
