My Homework Mix
« on: 26 Mar 2008, 20:28 »

So I mean, Holy shit I pretty much have the most savage homework mix ever right now. It consists of (in order):

Telepopmuzik--Breathe
Muse--Knights of Cydonia
Metallica--The Ecstacy of Gold
The Arcade Fire--Nieghborhood #1 (Tunnels)
DJ Tiesto--Lord of Trance
The Toadies-- I Come From the Water
Modest Mouse--Cowboy Dan
Blonde Redhead--In particular
Modest Mouse--Third Planet
Zeromancer--Eurotrash
Freezepop--Less Talk More Rokk
Alanis Morisette--You Oughtta Know
Coldplay--Yellow
Toy Box--Superstar

Each one of those songs officially rocks hard.  I recomend them all to you.  Whats your fave homework music?

My homework mix:

My entire music library.

I'm not very particular when it comes to listening while doing homework.

I can't really listen to anything with a singer (or singers) while working -- I mean, I can, but it'll end up distracting me.  Lately, I've been finding Four Tet pretty great for doing work to.

You would be better off listening to instrumental stuff for studying/homework. Music with lyrics tends to distract most people, especially if you are prone to rocking the fuck out. I also find it's better for me to listen to one particular band or album for each particular subject. As it stands I associate Cradle of Filth (not really instrumental but it's not easy to make out the lyrics in most metal anyway) with Learning Theory, Danny Elfman with psychological philosophy and Nine Inch Nails' instrumental stuff with Psycholinguistics.

If I really have to think, I really shouldn't listen to anything. However, if it's unavoidably noisy around and I need something to cancel it all out ... Morcheeba, perhaps; or Stars of the Lid; maybe Sigur Ros.

My mother's choice for homework mix is HOW CAN YOU POSSIBLY CONCENTRATE LIKE THAT?! AUGHH!?

Sometimes she is correct. But sometimes music can get me going on something, in the same way it helps you jog or something.

I don't have an official homework mix but lately I have been helped by the best songs off of "Tragic Kingdom" by No Doubt, "Antarctica" by the Never, "OCMS" and "Big Iron World" by Old Crow Medicine Show. The Old Crow helped at first, but after a week or so it just made me wonder why I was doing homework instead of wandering the great open spaces and drinkin' and smokin' and raisin' hell. That certainly counts as a distraction, if more spiritual than anything else. Sigh.

I'm the exact same way, although more specifically with lyrics; stuff like Sigur Ros or even Lightning Bolt works because it's essentially gibberish. So as far as instrumental stuff goes it depends on what the homework is. If it's something really boring that I have no desire to work on, it's gotta be something upbeat like LB or Don Cab, but if it's something for a class that's interesting and I don't mind working on it I can get away with playing a little more low-key like Sigur Ros, Explosions, or the like.  Do Make Say Think and Pelican are two of my most played homework artists, because they're pretty universal for me.
