The 2008 QC charity auction thread
« on: 28 Apr 2008, 07:33 »

This thread is pretty simple and it should work terrificly if people are willing to take part. Basically people pick something they're willing to send to someone else on QC - be it a dvd, a book, a mix tape, a wooly hat or whatever - and then they pick a charity they want some money to go to.  Then they post in this thread detailing what they're "selling" and what the charity is (and if you want a reason behind the charity choice) and folks bid on the item via PM.  Every item is open for bidding for two weeks (perhaps shorter, thoughts?) and at the end of it the seller and the highest bidder arrange the posting of the item and the donating to charity.  Once an auction is closed the post should be edited to show who won the auction and - if everyone is happy to put it up - the amount bid.

So I'm asking folks to think of what they could bear to part with or what they could make in order to take part in this thread.

Also please remember that this entire thread will only work based on trust and people actually posting what they said they would, so if you don't think you're organised enough to remember to post something or to pay a charity then don't take part.

Oh yeah, it'd make life hella easier for everyone if the charities are able to be donated to online.

I'm up for posting someone (anywhere in the world, although it'll be posted the cheapest way possible) an unused but opened copy of Company of Heroes gold edition (which is company of heroes and company of heroes opposing fronts) which I bought but doesn't run on my PC because of my graphics card being shit. For this I'm after a donation to Rape Crisis Scotland I guess to the Glasgow centre as that's my city. I think that's a pretty self explanatory one.

Go go go!

Perhaps a bit more description on what you're actually selling? I guess it's a computer game, that's all I know about it.

A five-part package from me:

-A signed copy of valleyparade's (me) "Buran" CD/EP. This is the only existing copy on CD.
-A thank you in the liner notes of the upcoming valleyparade album, "THIS WILL SCARE YOUR DOG"*
-A signed copy of said album**
-A green Boston Red Sox cap, size XL (will fit size 7 3/8 to 7 1/2). Looks like this.
-A valleyparade poster, designed by QC's very own Gemmwah.

My charity of choice is The Jimmy Fund. It's a New England-based group that works with the Dana Farber Cancer Institute.

*May not actually scare dogs. Results will vary.
**My target release date is May 27, which is outside of the two weeks. The winning bidder will get the album when it is released, and other goodies beforehand.

This is a damned excellent idea. I'll think of something to sell and a charity to donate it to when i get home.

Fucking ace.

Okay, my donation choice is going to the Forclosure Cat Project. They're also affiliated with some no kill shelters.

My package will include: a mixed cd, an original mini-comic, and a random object/thing that will fit in a package with the other two items.

I absolutely love this idea and so I've agreed to do a bit for Shane. Might think of something else to auction too.

For a moment I thought you were going to have them send the money to me. I got really excited.

I will take a picture of myself wearing (almost) whatever you want in whatever pose you want.  I don't mean this in a dirty way.
good example:  "wear a silly hat while standing on one leg in a park"
bad example:  "wear your birthday suit while giving me a sexy look"
Bad examples will all be ignored.

What I will do is take this picture, then have it printed all nice-like, and then mail you the hard copy.  After you receive it I will delete the photo from my computer.  Then you will be the only one who owns this picture of me and you can keep it for blackmail, or burn it, or whatever you like.

Since I can do multiples of these, if it's okay, I'm not going to make it an auction.  The price for the photo is any gift you'd like to get from Oxfam Unwrapped (whether it's something that costs £5 or £1200 or anything in between).

Requests are open until May 21, at which date I will start taking pictures.  I will try and send them all out before the month is out.  (I can't send them out any earlier because this is an awkward time for me - I'm heading back to Charlotte on May 20th and then I will be busy working, catching up with high school friends, getting a license etc.)  If you ask for something difficult then you might have to wait longer while I try and figure out how to do it.

as in, i wasn't one before?

Option 2:
A less narcissistic item.
I will color in a page in my coloring book for you and mail it to you along with a random surprise.
Same charity & conditions as before:  I'll take requests until May 21, and the charity is Oxfam Unwrapped.

Charity, Jimmy! This isn't the "personal gain auction thread".

Don't you modify clothes? Modify something interesting to auction, maybe?

you draw really cool portraits!  you could draw someone a personalized portrait.
or you could auction off old clothes/jewelry.  (i was going to do that initially, but like i said, it's an awkward time for me - i'd have to lug all that stuff to charlotte with me and then mail them from there.)

Well if anyone's interested in a copy of my fantasy novel I wrote for NaNoWriMo last year, I can send that out anywhere. I don't have any particular charity in mind so I'm open to any suggestion. It's still not quite finished and I would have to wait till after my exams are finished to write the last few thousand words and edit it.

Slightly OT: You did NaNoWriMo? I've tried two or three times, managed twice I think. We should have a thread.

Slightly less OT: I would love to do this if I had anything useful to offer. I'll definitely bid on MaiAda's colouring book page though, if I can find the money. I'll PM you about it in the next couple of weeks.

My charity of choice is The Jimmy Fund. It's a new way to give your money to Jimmy the Squid. He needs it, you know?

For a moment I thought you were going to have them send the money to me. I got really excited.

Charity, Jimmy! This isn't the "personal gain auction thread".

I think what Shane is trying to say is that you should all send money to me. It's just like recycling guys, Do The Right Thing.

Ok guys.  My chosen charity is the RSPCA Australia. http://www.rspca.org.au/

I will draw you a portrait of anyone you like, you, your girlfriend/boyfirend, friend, some movie star, whoever.  A proper one too, not one of my lazy ones, one more like this: http://ebony-willow.deviantart.com/art/Amber-79148091
Also, I will make a t shirt for you, with a design you want!  it will probably be a bit dodgy, but I will try my best!  You can tell me what kind of thing you want, and I will deisgn.  For example if you were Emilio you would want turntables ON FIRE.

And if you are not Australian there will probably be Tim tams involved as well.

Oh oh!!! Me me!! I'm doing this.

I'm going to be donating three 'art things', so separate ones will work. You can view a small sampling of my art on: http://mister-king.deviantart.com/gallery/ and a larger(however more 'furry') sampling on: http://www.furaffinity.net/gallery/thepyrex/

Any style/subject matter you don't see there can be completed/attempted at your request, if it's digital I'll send a higher res copy, if it's real media I'll do my best to mail you the original(as long as you treat it nice!)

I'm not sure what charity I'd like stuff to go to but I'll look about.

ALSO I HAVE A HARRY POTTER GRYFFINDOR  TIE(pictures will be taken if requested) if anyone is interested.

I LOVE YOUR ART.

Sadly I can't afford to donate to any charity at the moment unless it's the flying-barmy-to-Germany-for-work-and-language-experience fund, but I wish wish wish I could.
