Arch Enemy are kind of gimmicky, seeing as though they don't take advantage of the fact they have a female singer (hur hur hur) and just have her do vocals that any male death metal vocalist could sing.

So, try some more death metal, I guess? Morbid Saint, Decapitated, Cryptopsy (except for their latest album), Death, Atheist, Sadus and stuff. Try some more extreme thrash, like Dark Angel.

Depends what era Arch Enemy you like, I guess.

But anyway, look at some Melodic Death Metal - you could start with the popular ones (early In Flames, Dark Tranquility, At The Gates), or some of my favourites (Kalmah, Edge Of Sanity, Amon Amarth).

Also, Carcass might be worth checking out, as that's where Michael Amott came from.

Arch Enemy are kind of gimmicky, seeing as though they don't take advantage of the fact they have a female singer (hur hur hur) and just have her do vocals that any male death metal vocalist could sing.

So wait, because they didn't transform their entire sound around having a female singer she's a gimmick? Because only male vocalists should do death metal vox? So any metal band with a woman in that's not a turgid Nightwish clone is some sort of publicity stunt? Besides which, I think you'll find a good 95% of DM vocalists couldn't pull off Leader of the Rats or Ravenous with the same level of venemous menace as Gossow with a boomstick up their arse. Gossow is fucking top notch, and actually has a unique and interesting style, certainly better than Anders Frieden or Mikael Stanne. and better than Johan Liva. Arch Enemy's problem has always been their extremely erratic standards of composition. Sometimes Amott turns the wank up too high, other times he is presumably busy off touring with Carcass and half-arses it. When it all comes together it's very good, when it doesn't, it is mediocre.

I find a lot of people make a big deal out of Arch Enemy having a female vocalist around where I am when it doesn't make an inkling of difference because of her vocal style.
It was absolutely unfair to call the band gimmicky given that this kind of thing wasn't their intention.

In any case, the best female vox I've ever heard in metal is Unexpect. Nightwish is now basically pop dressed up as metal, so they don't count even if the vocals are technically quite good.

Hello again chaps

Got 6 of the bands

Dispised 1

Like listening to 3

And love 2.

Love - Kalmah and Amon Armarth

Also - Going to DL; Morbid Saint, Decapitated, Cryptopsy, Death, Atheist, Sadus and Dark Angel next.

Thanks to those whom advised said bands.

EDIT - While looking for the above bands found a TV series called 'Dark Angel'... Just so you know.

I'm totally going to shout "Insomnium" again. They're not that similar, but both in the the melodic death metal area. Arch Enemy is almost leaning towards a metalcore sound on the vocals (in some areas only), so maybe try some Children of Bodom?

EDIT: NO I AM NOT SAYING COB IS METALCORE O MAI.

Lacuna Coil is hardly metal, but their female vocalist Christina Scabbia has a nice voice, even though there is a bit too much echo effect on the mix sometimes.  I would recommend Epica, but I haven't heard really anything by them but in passing, and if you don't like Nightwish, you're guaranteed not to like Epica I think.

I love Nightwish - I'll check em' out.

If you're interested in female leader singers doing extreme vocals, Arkona is a interesting Russian folk metal band whose lead singer alternates between growls and a throaty alto singing voice.  They mix in some decent Russian folk instrumentals, but they are also fairly heavy on the metal side.

Dalriada (formerly Echoes of Dalriada) is a very original Hungarian folk metal band, whose lead singer is a lot stronger and earthier than most of the breathy sopranos in beauty and the beast gothic metal.

PS There is also a pagan black metal band from Poland called Arkona, that's a bit more average and obscure, even if they called themselves Arkona first.

umm, for melodic death metal that haven't already been mentioned...

Dark Tranquility - i honestly dont listen to these guys very often but when i do i am not dissappointed. kind of a strange growling vocal, but good instrumentation and atmosphere.

InFlames- yeah, dont get their newest three(?) albums, much more numetal/core ish, but their earlier stuff is pretty good, with some really great harmonized riffing and leads. lyrics and vocals arent bad either.

All that Remains -  very good slightly on the metalcore side, but very talented, with a wide range of vocals and some epic riffery. apparrently they are also great live, which oddly helps me listen to them. something annoying about listening to a song then imagining a live version sucking.

hell yes on amon amarth.

you should try some thrash bands out as well if you havent already. a lot of people dismiss the genre as being just "metallica and slayer" but the lesser known ones are truly amazing. such as Testament, Kreator, Municipal Waste.

It is to show he cares for your opinion.

And thanks Diablo, Ima gunna go check out Testament, Kreator and Municipal Waste.

Also - out of Morbid Saint, Decapitated, Cryptopsy, Death, Atheist, Sadus and Dark Angel;

Can't find Dark Angel or Morbid saint.
Otherwise - Great music.

Also, currently in the process of acheiving Dalriada (Under their former name) and almost got the Russian version of Arkona.

Thanks to all whom have contributed so far. And to those who haven't.

EDIT - Firstly, fixing spelling errors. Secondly - Arkona seem very sexy...

yeah, just so you know what to expect with testament, municipal waste and kreator, i put them cause a lot of arch enemys riffs are like thrash metal stuff, dont expect the bands to sound like them much, but if you like ripping guitar, they are a good place to start

Fifthed (?) on Amon Amarth.  Also, check out Himsa if you like Archenemy.

The notion that a woman is gimmicky if she sings death metal-style vocals is ridiculous.  In that style of music, that is generally the notion of how the singing is supposed to be done. Super girly vocals would be as out of place there as growling would be on a pop album.

Gimmie a week or so ^.^

Still think Amon Amarth and Kalmah are hot!..

I don't know.  With Liiva, his vocal style only fit with, like, half of the songs.  And on top of that, he was ass at a live show, could only do 5 songs if he was lucky.  Angela could probably pull off a 2-hour set (if she hasn't already), and her style fits better.

couple of things:

-In Flames: get Lunar Strain and Subterranean first because they are the fucking sex.

...i thought i had one more point to address but i guess not.

I maintain that The Jester Race/Black Ash Inheritance is the best album they ever did.  But Lunar Strain and Subterranean are also good.  Can't say much about everything else.  I used to like it, but it got annoying after a while.

I think he was that he was holding her up to the standards set by UneXpect, who are pretty damn good.

But, unfortunately, UneXpect have to compete with Diablo Swing Orchestra, which makes them look so much worse. 9 out of 10 music nerds agree, DSO is the best thing ever.

As Spluff said, I was saying that UneXpect are fantastic and a brilliant example of how female vocals in metal are best utilised.

They're a pretty good example of how male vocals are best utilised, too.
