How to make a 6 string sound like a 12 string?
« on: 23 Jun 2008, 14:55 »

I really like the sound of 12 string guitars but don't want to buy one; all the good ones are too expensive IMO. Is there an effects pedal that can do this? Don't say chorus unless there is really one that sounds like a 12 string.

String two strings on top of each other, in the same pegs.

This will not fuck up the neck of your guitar in the slightest.

but the music sucks because the keyboards don't have the cold/mechanical sound they had but a wannabe techno sound that it's pathetic for Rammstein standars.

If you really want it in a pedal, then the Electro Harmonix POG (it's an octave generator) will give you a twelve string-ish sound if you get the settings right, but at around 200 bucks, you might just want to save up for an actual 12-string off of craigslist or something.

Isn't that Jellyfish pick supposed to make a six string sound like a twelve string?  I'm not sure exactly tho.

I remember reading an interview with Johnny Marr once and he mentioned that he often did this simply by using the higher strings only on a standard guitar

An octave pedal is as close as you'll get, but nothing really replicates the sound like the real thing.

Nashville tuning. You can even mix them into separate channels, which is pretty cool. I plan on trying this sometime soon.

Basically, the short answer is no. You'll never find anything that sounds as good enough as a real 12-string.

Don't those mash chords together into one big jumble?

Yeah, octave pedals don't work so well when it comes to chords unless you get a reeeeeeeeally good one. You don't get the definition of a twelve string, either.

And what's more, you don't get the two different vibrations of two different strings next to each other. You just get an electronic synthesis of the other note.

I guess I'll be saving up for that Fender XII then. Or a Dano 12.

I mean, if you want to create great ugly noise then definitely play chords through an octave pedal. But it won't work for sounding like a twelve-string. At most it'll sound like you're playing octaves.
