Internet friends and the real world

--- Quote from: jhocking on 04 Jun 2008, 06:13 ---Incidentally, thinking about Second Life in this context reminds me of a rather unusual story about internet people meeting up. One guy I knew in SL died a little while ago. He was Dutch, and a mutual friend of ours who lived in Amsterdam went to the funeral. They'd met a couple times in real life before the guy had a heart attack, but that still must have been extremely awkward for the family.

This has always been something that got me thinking. I mean it's possible to make quite strong friendships on the internet yet we don't necessarily have any way of finding out things about their personal lives aside from when we talk to them on the net, anyone of us could walk outside tomorrow and get hit by a truck, and some of the people who consider themselves to be your friend would never know what happened, unless the person who died knew someone else on here personally. How many people's next of kin would think to inform the internet about when they pass away?
RedLion:
Depends if you have "internet" friends who are linked to a facebook page of yours, perhaps, where your meat life friends would post sorrowful tributes to you or something. It could be learned that way.

Yeah fuck that guy.
I miss him.

The first time I met up with internet friends was a lunch in Sydney organised two day beforehand. I told my parents "I'm going to Sydney on Friday to have lunch with the internet!" and off I chuffed. Met up with fatty and Jimmy, had thai, talked for a fair while and went home. I was much more comfortable around those guys than any of my peers at home; it has always been like that, and I am pretty sure I have had more fun at internet meetups than real-friend parties. I am pretty sure I wouldn't be able to giggle at phallic symbols at an art gallery with my real-life friends.
