Last Thursday I went to see awesome local band Mikelangelo & the Tin Star play a fairwell (for now) show at the Northcote Social Club (one of the best venues in town). Some of you may know of Mikelangelo from his previous band, Mikelangelo & the Black Sea Gentlemen. Mikelangelo & the Tin Star play surf & western music, some of it instrumental and some of it not, and they're one of the few bands around whose only ambition seems to be to have fun and give everyone a good time. Mikelangelo is a natural frontman, a brilliant extrovert:; he has a hilarious "origin myth" song about how he was born from an egg that fell from a tree beneath which his parents were having passionate sex: according to the song his "parents" put the egg in a barn, whereupon it hatched and Mikelangelo was born, "looks like a bull but sings like a nightingale" (which is a pretty accurate description of the man, though I don't know if nightingales come in baritone). In another song, which is typically the band's set closer, Mikelangelo proclaims "action is my middle name", and sets about running through the audience, leaping off bars and shouting in people's faces. It's hilarious and exhilirating all at once - especially when, as on this occasion, he's wearing nothing but a pair of outrageous striped swimming trunks, complete with belt loops (and belt).

The band's touring Europe in the next couple of months, I think, so I'll try to find out some dates and locations and let you all know because if you go see them you'll definitely have a lot of fun.

Thinking not. I know, swimming against the stream. I just don't get how they got to be such a deal.
