Looks like he got lost on his way to the comics forums. They have people who want to get it on with Jeph's drawings, I wouldn't bet against them having Dave Matthews fans too.

Man, fuck you guys.

Usually they come to a venue like ten minutes from my house, and I try to go to that show, but since they're not I'm definitely gonna try to see 'em at Nissan this year.  Since Bristow is the closest to Charlottesville they come while they're on tour, that's essentially their hometown show, so it's always a safe bet for seeing them put on a great set.

I saw them once. Five years ago.

Of course, that week was overshadowed by my uncle dying, and going to see Manchester United wipe the whole of northern New Jersey with Juventus.

What are you talking about?  Juve's biggest loss this season was only by 2 points, a 3-1 loss against Napoli.  Yeah, they lost to Inter in the Coppa Italia, but when you consider they've got 2 of Serie A's 3 top scorers and the best goalie in the world, yes, I would say that makes them pretty awesome.  You a Milan fan?

tl;dr fuck youuuuuuu

The match I went to! Manchester United 4-1 Juventus. So it was only a three goal difference, but that's because Diego Forlan couldn't hit an open net.

The thing that I think bugs people the most about these 90s frat rock bands (as opposed to 60s frat rock) is the Jimmy Fallon-ass smiles they give the camera. Like that asshole Keller Williams and the picture above this post. They are constantly doing that shit like they are above everything. I do like Phish though, but I hate that part of myself.

That's kind of a dumb reason for disliking these bands. How about disliking them because they're prodigiously bland instead?

Guys what have I said before about being dicks to new kids? This is starting to get out of hand again.

The issue isn't even whether this is a gag account (maybe?) or whether most of us thing DMB is godawful (I do). It's about at least TRYING not to be elitist cocks when somebody new comes in.

I like DMB.

It's pretty listenable (as opposed to about 45% of the bands I see around here recommended) and comfortable, like a soft blanket.

Most of the stuff I see around here is as comfy as a jackhammer to the face, and rapes your ears, and tells them the world they see is not real.

I feel like there's a really interesting discussion to be had about whether or not the split between sport and art is a false dichotomy . . . but I guess it probably wouldn't fit into the music forum very well. Hmm.

I don't mind seeing Dave, he usually has some very talented Musicians with him.  I'll be seeing him at Rothbury, just because, you know, I'm there, may as well.

He was a favorite of mine ~5 years ago, but his vocal style has worn thin for me.  I think he is only "frat rock" by virtue of massive overplay on the radio.  As I don't listen to radio much, I don't get oversaturated with any band, so I rarely have much to complain about in regards to a band being "too popular" or whatever.  I saw Dave live in like 99, and yeah the crowd was mostly yuppie larvae, but who cares?

Oh snap

OH SNAAAAAAAAAAAAAP

Honestly I would say a lot of the indie rock people dig on here is a lot more unlistenable than a lot of the metal. We are not exactly talking objective terms here.

Yeah I mean even trying to define "listenable" is an exercise in subjective futility.

Also, there is a lot of music I enjoy specifically BECAUSE it is so "unlistenable." Accepting, of course, a mainstream assumption of what listenability in music means, and ignoring the fact that by enjoying listening to the music I have redefined it in my own personal experience AS listenable and oh goddamnit see what I'm talking about

When I saw DMB at Nissan a few years back, I remember they covered Ring of Fire by Johnny Cash and I thought it was pretty good.  I'm excited to be seeing them again.

he is only "frat rock" by virtue of massive overplay on the radio

I honestly have a problem with so many people just writing DMB off as "frat rock" and moving on (not that you did!  You were just the most recent post to use the term.) When I hear the term "frat rock," I think the movement from the '60s or so, as opposed to newer stuff; the Troggs, Paul Revere and the Raiders, Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs, etc.  I have a hard time transferring frat rock into today's music.  So, when I hear somebody use the term in reference to a recent band, to me they're just saying that so-and-so is some shitty band that they just think frat guys listen to, and I can tell you right now this is anything but the case for DMB.  I've got friends in a bunch of UMD frats, and maybe it's just around here, but I'm one of like five people I know who likes DMB.  I've never in my life heard them played by a frat guy; around here, the frat guys are all about House.  To me, DMB is strictly alternative, jazz-fusion.

In defense of the "frat rock" statements, the one time I went to see DMB the crowd was about 50% douchebag college kids with (this was 2002 or so) popped collars on Abercrombie shirts on the guys and "Juicy" short-shorts on the girls.  Not to say fashion is the ultimate decider, but the crowd did have a pretty high douchebag-to-hipster ratio I guess.  The other half was mostly folks like me - aging not-quite-hippies there to oggle the girls in the "Juicy" short-shorts ;)

I like a lot of his music, up to Before These Crowded Streets, he has some interesting things to say and is a good songwriter.  Some awesome stuff to sing along to, and again the musicians he has are some talented folk - some of the jam sessions I saw them do were quite impressive.  But due to just insane radio play you get the lowest common denominator at his shows.  He isn't Frat Rock in the way, say, Lincoln Park is, but just because everyone and their brother know and love him.

This argument seems to me as if it could be summarized as 'I don't like Dave Matthews because he is too popular.' And I guess that's fair; I mean, if you want to judge a musician based on the size and makeup of his audience, then that's your lookout. I prefer to judge musicians based on their music, but over the years I've become increasingly convinced that I am in a very small minority on that count.

As for listenability, I tend to equate that to complexity. Music that is simple is easier to listen to, whereas complex or dense compositions are more difficult and require more analysis; this is especially true for atonal pieces, like some of Scriabin's stuff. It's been my experience that a lot of casual music listeners don't like stuff that they feel like they need a degree to appreciate, which causes jazz and classical to be heavily undervalued, along with some more complex rock and metal. Pop is almost always very simple, major keys and ABA construction.

Well, I'm not going to weigh in on the positives or negatives of DMB, except to say that I'm a big fan (judge me however you wish)

I'm going to the June 9 show at the DTE Energy Music Theater, and I'm really excited about it.

Uh..   I was actually making the opposite case, that I like him (though I'm not digging the last few albums), and that I think those who don't may do so simply because he is too popular....

I was refuting the "frat rock" label.

See, on this front I agree, but I was mainly taking offense to the instant label of some band as "frat rock" just because some douche in an abercrombie shirt likes them.  Like I said, around here DMB is popular with pretty much everybody except the stereotypical frat douchebags.  A lot of the people I know that like DMB are really into music, and like I think I do, appreciate them on the level that Dave is a good songwriter, and the band has a pretty good sound, not because some jackass said they were good while he was drunk off his ass.  That being said...

Dave Matthews is still playing?  I remember hearing his stuff on the radio a lot in high school but I've heard fuck all about him since.

My roommate freshman year was a huge DMB fan, it was tolerable. Of course my constant mix of Iron Maiden and Metallica probably wasn't much fun either. We would compromise on the Beatles.
