I came in here to agree with the title... and then realized that you're right.

Why must rationality always ruin my attempts to create/join angry mobs?

Always?  I seem to recall many a internet argument where rationality took a back seat.  Have you ever tried the discussions on youtube?  Imagine monkeys throwing feces.

There was an alt-text to a xkcd strip that said "Try posting an opinion on youtube that's so ridiculous, people realise you must be joking. It's impossible." I think he was right.
