i don't know. you could also argue that the opposite is also true.

i mean, evolution functions because mutations fill previously under-utilized niches in the food chain, right? well, the duck-billed, egg-laying, poison-footed mammal niche is a hard one to access so it's highly unlikely that anything would evolve to fill it...but if something did, then it would undoubtedly thrive because it has no competition.

I think, but I am by no means sure, that the platypus is commonly used as an example of the evolutionary link between reptiles and mammals. I seem to remember reading that somewhere at any rate.
