Ugh. Something about that repels me. It looks ornate in a bad way.

I think it's that it looks like some computer company exec said to one of his guys "Y'know these steampunk cases are big right now, we could make a lot of money selling a mass market version!"
And his engineering guy basically said "Well, if it's Victorian then it'll be made out of wood, so we'll just make the exact same stuff we usually make but we'll use a fake wood grain plastic."
Basically it looks cheap and nasty.

That's cherry, a genuine hardwood. You guys are so used to seeing imitation crap, then when you actually see the real thing, you think it looks cheap and plastic. It's not shiny because it's plastic; it's varnished and polished.
Whatever. I'll go take my nap now.
