I only use gel when I have been wearing the hat and don't want to have crappy hair.
Also, in small amounts it can be good, and in large ammounts (if your not going out) it can be great fun, I know I have spent quite some time thinking "I wonder what I would look like with a mohawk" and then found out.

Mine was summer '07, I had a righteous fauxhawk going on for several weeks until I decided to have longer hair again.

I toss some gel into my hair to get it to not just fall over and to help control the rampant cowlicks I get from the way I sleep.
