It's an animation technique, but I was referring more to the style that is used in the Linklater films Waking Life and A Scanner, Darkly.

Oooh, okay thank you. Upon googling it I was a little confused, and huh, I always thought A scanner, darkly was done through vector imaging. But thank you.

I'm suspecting you may have some other meaning in mind when you say "vector imaging," but note that Illustrator is based on vector graphics. So yes, they probably did use vectors for those drawings; vector graphics are routinely used for doing illustrations of people. Just do a gis for 'vector portrait'

I know that illustrator uses vectors etc but what I mean is more liiike this

It was done with vector images. I think "Waking Life" was hand-painted, but in any case it's all rotoscoping! :D

The DVD I have depicts dozens of artists painstakingly hand drawing over every single frame for both movies using tablets in a program with a strikingly similar interface to photoshop.
