SPORE
« on: 17 Jun 2008, 13:35 »

i know we've had a couple topics on this before but they are all pretty old and hold very little important information/discussion, so it seemed a new topic was in order what with the Creature Creator being released today and all.
i figure we could use this space to share things we've created with each other and talk about them etc.

So, who's downloaded it? who's bought it? when i get off work i'm going to go around town to see if any stores actually have the retail version and if not i'll download the free version when i get home. updates will follow later.

so anyway let's see some critters!

I'm not gonna give out money for the creator, but I definitely just finished installing the trial version.  I fully plan on buying the whole game when it comes out, regardless of creatures.  Will post screenies or links to screenies later.

Edit:  Well, if you create a Spore account, you can login at the site and search through creations by creator.  I don't know how fleshed out the whole search engine is, but it's a bit easier than hosting the screenies ourselves.  Or we could take the short route and just post links to our profile pages, like so.

Creature Creator comes out the same day as Firefox 3. Huh.

Also, you have to PAY for it? What the fuck?

There's a free trial version with less content.

Still, given that they'll be using what people create now to populate the game universe on day one, making people pay for it is Grade EA dickery.

well, if you pay for the full Creature Creator you get a coupon for that amount off the full game when it comes out in September so it's not like you're spending any extra money if you were planning on buying the game anyway.

I'll probably get it next paycheck, then.  I'm trying to be careful with money this summer, even if it's only 10 bucks.

I downloaded the trial and it is fascinating, even if all of my creatures are disgusting monstrosities. The only problem I have right now is that all of the parts have statistics that reflect on your monster's ability in the actual game, but at least all the parts in the trial are much too low to max out all the statistics effectively without loading your creature with parts. In other words, aesthetics and effectiveness become mutually exclusive. I really hope that the parts unavailable in the trial are better, so that I won't get frustrated trying to make a creature that is both good in the actual game and doesn't look like it was shit out of Satan's putrid asshole.

The game will also run on my laptop, which means I'll actually be able to play it when it comes out. I guess that's a bonus to spending a ridiculous amount of time in development.

oh man that Spore guide button on the bottom right is really helpful. now i know how to copy parts and how to change the size of things when there is no handle/slider-thingy to do so.

so of course i made this hideous thing:

It's almost disgusting how much fun it is to make a creature that's completely useless.  It's got 9 legs, it's mouth is at the center of the space under its legs, and it's eyes are down their, too.  And it's got a spiky thing on top to try and hit with.

Downloaded the leaked version a few days ago, have played around a little. It's very interesting to note how much faster/slower the creature becomes just depending on where/how you position the legs.

The creature creator looks quite fun. Unfortunately, with this I found out more about how the game is going to flow. It sounds more and more like it's got sections that all play really differently rather than the cool evolution simulator that I first imagined.

I bought it off EA.com
Let me just say i'll never use their download service again.  I bought it 6 hours ago and apparently they put in a queueing system where you'll have to wait.  It's a freaking DOWNLOAD, it should be instant!  Apparently this is happening to a bunch of other people too, so yeah.

Anyway, the trail is just terrific and the full version will probably be great if I am ever allowed to download it and install it.  Course, now that they have my money, I suppose they don't care.  Also, their customer service is absolutely aweful.

Totally.  I mean, they do have some kind of coupon thing for people who bought it (I don't know how it works, though), and it's dual-platform.  But you get MUCH better options for parts and painting.

I figured out how to split limbs, which is something I wanted to do ever since I saw it in a demo video, like a friggin' year ago.

So I went crazy with it. Should have zoomed in, oh well.
One thing I noticed is that it is very fast. I call it "Limbety Split."

I just bought the creature creator for 40 norwegian kroner (8 bucks). Cheap, when a normal game costs 600. And it's a winner. I'm so buying the whole game now. Weeee!

EA's pretty furious about it, but you know, there's a reason there's the disclaimer along the lines of "Online experience not rated by the ESRB". That having been said, EA is going to crack down, given that Spore is ostensibly rated E (or maybe that was just the creature creator?). They'll probably monitor online creations through accounts with software and such, and disable accounts (effectively making Spore a waste of money) when they find Sporn. When you buy Spore, your worlds will probably only be populated with the 15,000 or so pre-made creatures in the Sporepedia and you can have the option of browsing user's creations and adding them, so there'll be no chance of your 5 year old being randomly subjected to faux-penises.

Except that Spore has already seen over half a million creatures created. That is a shitload of monitoring that I will bet EA isn't prepared to cough up money for. So we all get penis creatures.

So they have the choice of scaling back their random creature implementor to a more manageable state (it was due for an overhaul as recently as last beta anyway) or implementing sloppy and user-unfriendly censoring software, which wouldn't be out of character for EA. The whole "community" aspect of Spore was seriously overhyped anyway. There's no reason the floodgates have to be welded open. Players should be given complete control over the range of creatures that can show up in their game.

Which I think is the role the Spore Catalog will eventually fulfill, on par with the Sims user-creation library. I'd imagine that things like user rating, or popularity, will also have an impact on things. Better-built creatures are bound to be more popular than, say, a one-eyed pogo-stick monster with 12 wings.

Bwah! I am getting so damn frustrated. I installed the game, and it keeps telling me that my graphics card is below the minimum. I know for a fact that is indeed not. I downloaded the latest version of Direct X, and it is still giving me that message. Any suggestions on what else I can do before I just buy a new card.

Mac or PC? My friend and I hacked his to run on his Mac, something to do with the source code for the supported operating system and graphics cards. Bastards, they can run it on more systems, but nooo they have to chain it to Leopard and the X3100. It's not as if it's a hardware dependency problem.
