Yes, but is it actually better than the familiar version? I mean, there's a trend in literature at the moment to publish first drafts of famous books, but sometimes editing is done for a reason.

This is indeed not the sort of reaction I expected. Although I didn't expect anything really, I was so excited at the time I just sort of posted.

Reason! Sure, but what kinds of reasons? To try and cut a 210 minute film down to 90, because that's what people were used to? A version sped up to 26 fps from 16 fps because there were trends to keep up with in the film industry? The film has never been, since 1927 truly complete. God! You're so negative! This is historic! It was thought to be lost forever!

OMG SWEET!  What's even better news and the one that you should have posted is that Kino is going to be restoring and releasing this complete version.  THAT is freaking sweet!  They did SUCH a masterful job of Nosferatu (I own it) and I know that they'll make Metropolis freaking sweet too.

This is pretty darn exciting! I enjoy neat artistic discoveries or treasures, and this is definitely a good one. Thanks for sharing.

any word on when it will start being screened?

this isn't like publishing a first draft. This is more like finding another copy of a book, after we fell in love with a copy half burned in a fire.

I own the cut version of Metropolis, and I haven't watched it yet, despite owning it for at least 2 years.  Now I'll have to, just so I can get the full version and enjoy it so much more.

I'm excited for this, too. However, I can see what Harry's getting at here. Ok, so the full version of the film is 210 minutes, up from 90 minutes. That's an extra 120 minutes of footage they're putting in here. Now, just because they're putting it in that does not necessarily mean that all, or even any of that 120 minutes is any good. To put it another way: if I find a dog turd in my backyard, that's exciting because the whole dog is nearby. However, what i found is still a dog turd.

To use an actual example, Apocalypse Now Redux, which restored 50 minutes of footage was inredibly tiresome and added nothing, instead degtracting from the whole experience.

Yeah.....but comparing Metropolis to Apocalypse Now is a little....weird.  I didn't enjoy Apocalypse anyway, I have no idea which version I saw.  It was just...meh.  Mind you I saw it a couple months ago so I totally missed out.

This is exciting, yes.  The 210 mins could also be re-cut to a more manageable length to include some of the lost footage.

I wouldn't say it is too rare an occurrence, honestly. Many Director's Cut or whatever are often bloated and detracting from the film. The Dune film was horrible when released, but Lynch's cut is outstanding in its shittiness.
