I know, it's strange.
But she requested a crash-course mix cd and I'm attempting to put one together, but the man has a ton of material and I'd hardly consider myself an expert. So outside the hits, which songs do YOU think should be used to convince others of Bowie's greatness?

One of the few instances whereby I will suggest a compilation.

I'm going to back tommy on this. Just get or put together a compilation of his singles: that's where the man's A material is.

a list of songs
This, but I'd add a few songs from Hunky Dory and Scary Monsters to the list. Also, "Young Americans" wouldn't be a bad addition.

Yeah, I know, it was an obvious kind of a thing to say, but it seemed politer than saying "Bowie had awesome singles but generally mediocre albums".

Oh shit!

Man, the Berlin Trilogy are all pretty good shit, as is Ziggy Stardust. Some of the others weren't that great, but that is four albums that are pretty much gold straight through.

There's a 2CD Bowie compilation that came out a few years back that's pretty decent called (obviously) Best of Bowie. It misses out some of my favorite Bowie songs, like "Station to Station", and the Berlin Trilogy is underrepresented, but it's a pretty good primer since it has at least one song from every album.

Generally. I said GENERALLY. David Bowie has put out about a squillion albums. My opinion is that the majority of those - not all, but certainly the majority - contain awesome singles and a whole lot of dud album tracks. But if you were going to try to get someone into Bowie only by making them listen to the good albums, you'd be neglecting all of those awesome singles that aren't on the good albums, which is why when it comes to Bowie it's better to approach him through singles first, rather than albums. In my opinion.

Try Best of 1969/74. Missing out on the Berlin Trilogy but if they like him enough they'll get to those.

That is a really excellent comp. I second the idea.

What kind of stuff does your friend usually listen to?  That's important.  Bowie has gone through many phases and dabbled in lots of different styles.

Everybody here is making good suggestions, but my first thought is that you pick some Bowie that is kinda close to what your friend usually likes.  If you're not familiar enough with Bowie to make that decision, post some of your friend's favorite bands/artists and we'll suggest things accordingly.

Man, I hated that record. Sounded like Ziggy watered down to me. The album, not the character, cause I know it was the same character. And yes, I even hate 'Jean Genie.'

Aladdin Sane has its moments. I love the cover of "Let's Spend the Night Together" on there, and there are a couple other good songs on there. However, I think the newer version of "Panic in Detroit" that was one of the bonus track on the Rykodisc release of Scary Monsters is better than the original (except for that fucking ridiculous interlude).
