This would probably make Minutemen fans cry
« on: 05 Aug 2008, 09:22 »

On August 4th in Montreal, a truck containing all of the equipment being used by The Stooges on their current tour was stolen.

Among the vintage amps and guitars was, heart crushingly, Mike Watt's Red Gibson 1963 EB-3 bass. Mike Watt is asking for your help.

And I thought Canada was a nice place.

Ahhh Minutement legendary stuff gone = booo.

Aahhhh Stooge stuff gone = DOUBLE BOO.

If they start playing Raw Power stuff live, I'll track this stuff down single-handedly.

Vaguely related - When Pink Floyd were touring America in the 1970s all their equipment got stolen. It turned out someone's girlfriend on the tour, her dad was at the FBI. She made a call, and all their shit, bar a guitar or two, showed up again within 24 hours. Which is slightly terrifying.

I honestly think stealing from a band is the lowest thing you can do.

Not to say piracy is a dastardly deed, but stealing their shit while they're on tour, come on.

Haha, that's awesome.

Seriously.  That shit's expensive.  It's not real easy for a band to come up with the money to replace it either.  Furthermore, most musicians I know (including myself) get attached to instruments and the emotional impact of losing a good friend like that is pretty rough.

That was a beautiful bass, I had the good fortune to see Watt touring with the Secondmen some years ago and that bass truely was a work of art, moreseo in person; it almost looked like a living breathing thing on stage. There's a special magnificence that comes from roadweary instruments like that. It's doubly sad that this is the second time this has happened to that bass, hopefully history will repeat itself and she'll be returned in good condition.

This is your fault, Canada. I had heard that Vancouver was the music gear theft capital of North America, possibly the world (same with Toronto, but for bicycles). Don't know if that's true.

In all seriousness, that really fucking sucks. You don't steal an artist's tools, whether they be the Stooges or... John Tesh or something. It ain't right. It's like horse theft. They should cut off the hands of the perpetrators.

Looking at the list, the only old/likely to be emotionally irreplacable thing is Mike Watt's bass. That sucks bigtime. But I reckon the thieves got a pretty shitty catch otherwise.

Holy shit that is slightly horrifying. Do you know if there's an extended version of the tale?

same with Toronto, but for bicycles.

They finally caught the bastard. Turns out he lives in the rich section of Toronto and sells the bikes at a store.

But yeah, whoever stole the equipment needs to spend lots of time in jail. That's just the lowest of the low, well besides rape and murder.

Only if they cut off the hands of John Tesh as well.
