I'm tall, dark and skinny.

I own 7 plain white t-shirts, and equal amount of blue jeans. I also own multiple plaid shorts which I wear a lot.

A lot.

What am I doing wrong?

Get some shirts that aren't plain white.  A couple polos and some casual shirts.  The military button down ones are generally accepted as good looking and cheap.

H&M is good for that.

I also own about 5 Polos and wear them when I want to be formal.

I have no idea what a H&M is.

I echo most of what everyone has said - updo, simple shoes, simple clutch. Make sure the bag and shoes match. Go with a small light necklace maybe with a small shiny stone in it? If you do small and shiny necklace, you could bling the earrings up a bit - but don't do big for both.
