I'm considering starting to wear makeup, in subtle amounts, as a fashion thing. Could be a terrible idea, could be awesome.
I do not really know how to put on makeup though.

I was about to ask if you're going for generic dude "I am wearing eyeliner JUST IN CASE you can't tell" look and then I read what I said and who it was to. If you don't have any, go for Sephora products. My word but they are infinitesimally better than any other makeup.
To be blunt though is the only time I've ever seen dudes rock the makeup is when they are androgynous enough where it doesn't look forced. If have really masculine features, like you do, it's really fucking hard to pull it off without just looking like a theater major. You're one of the few I have faith in though.
