I am kind of jealous- those would make a great stage outfit.

Sorry Ballard, I don't think you'll be able to make the cast of RENT this year regardless of the pants you'd wear.

Hey clothes thread, I have some extra cash from selling my computer, do I blow half of it on boots, or buy reasonable things that I actually need, like shirts and a new pair of jeans?

As of right now I am basically cycling through all possible combinations of 3 plaid shirts and two plaid jackets (Rocking the double, or even triple, plaid is the sign of pure man). However, I also have been wanting/needing a pair of boots for ages.

The boots are cruel seductresses., the clothes are nice, boring wives.

Here is my take on Andy's pants--I think they suit her. I think that 99% of people could not make them work, but my bet is that she will rock them because she's got the attitude for them. I'd be interested in seeing an entire outfit with them to see what she does with it.

This. I had a friend who had some chartreuse and magenta pants that were hideous, but she could wear them because she had the right attitude for them.

Oh my god these sound wonderful. I bet they are totally rockin'

Basically, I would suggest you buy the things you NEED. If you really need some new jeans and a couple of new shirts and just want the boots, then buy the things you need first. Alternatively, if you NEED them all - which ones would be more useful at the moment?

I should probably buy the shirts/jeans now and wait a little while longer on the boots. :-/

I'll just end up buying some Levi's 514s (can't go any slimmer without being, er, not as fat), and more plaid shirts. Unless, that is, I can find some decent work shirts/safari shirts around town, this is difficult, given I live in a college town.

So I'd never really heard of levi's jeans until I came to the fashion thread; are they really as good as you guys make them out to be? And where else can I find good jeans? I decided today that I need a pair of jeans that doesn't look exactly like every other pair of jeans that I own.

By "never really heard of" I mean that I was aware there was a company called levi's and that they produced some jeans. That was all I'd ever heard about them.

We're not surprised because you're not well-versed in the latest trends or some shit. It's just that Levi's are jeans. As in Levi Strauss invented denim pants (though originally they were overalls) in the mid 1800's.

Over the years they've become fashionable and there's a billion different washes and cuts now but they used to be and still are the most common brand of jeans out there.

I've had Levis, never noticed anything special about them, and I might have more that I don't know about, since their little leather bit with the logo on it tends to lose the front part, with the logo, easily.

I knew taking the cheap rent and living under a rock was a bad idea.

Anyways, since we've determined that levi's are, in fact, great jeans, let's say I haven't got the $70 to drop on them, where else could I be looking for some reasonable jeans?

Standard Levi's are like 40-50 bucks. It's all the premium cuts and washes that get expensive.

The only Levi's that are 'anything special' are the Big E type. The rest are just cheap, decent jeans.

No one should go through life without owning at least one pair of 501's.

If you buy 501's in anything but shrink to fit, you are not doing it right.

They are the best jeans. I take jeans seriously, so take me seriously when I say this.

I've never been able to find the shrink-to-fit 501s in a store, Kieffer. Maybe that's the problem.

Please ignore my face. My boyfriend told me to smile, which is why I look so ridiculous.

Mind you, I had my hair down like that for a few hours while doing some shopping and whatnot. It was very windy. My hair tried to kill me several times.

It looks better. I still agree that if there were more hair in front of your ears, it would work even better. But with your hair as long as it is, that's not really too much of an option.

Also, your face is not ridiculous.

Long hair is very hard to work with. I usually go and have my hair angled, so the starting point in the front is at my chin if not a tad bit higher.

I need to go get a trim, but money is tight and I'm not talented enough to do it by myself.

Edit: My hair is longer now, the woman who did my hair the last time did a very good job. Also, before she touched my hair I had horrible dark brown dye in it. She weaved in blonde for me because I wanted to try and get back to my natural color.

Also, ninja's kick ass.

Unless you want Simo Häyhä on your ass.

But back to fashion:

I've recently realized that after I graduate in May, I'll no doubt have to do job interviews. Which means I'll need proper attire. So my question is this:
Are there dress pants in existence that are not ugly? I looked at Goodwill, I looked at Ross, I looked at pinnacle-of-current-fashion-Macy's. They are all hideous. Nothing about them ever appeals to me. Am I broken? Am I overlooking something? I never even tried any on, because they all looked so awful.

I briefly considered the world of skirts, but trust me, that is not a good idea. I have... thick legs. It would be bad. So pants it is, but they seem to be conspiring against me.

Any thoughts from the vaults of infinite fashion (and fascist) advice?

How are you managing to find only ugly dress pants? Dress pants are awesome, you just need to find some with the right cut. Most of them look really nice, actually, is what I've discovered. It's easier to find dress pants that fit me properly than jeans, at least.

So yes, there are ones that aren't ugly. Simple black, gray or pinstriped are all good.

My 'dress pants' are a $30 pair or something I picked up from a store here called ICE. I have a couple of pairs - they were pretty much the standard at school for the type of pants girls wore and I wear them to work all the time. They are super comfy, not over the top and look professional. I've worn them to every job I've had so they must be okay? They are just a plain simple black pair that sit at my hips. I'd suggest you try some on - they don't look the best on the rack and it is hard to tell what they will actually look like on you until you put it on. Pants are hard like that. I hate shopping for pants and jeans.

If you are statestide, I've found pretty good dress pants by a brand called YMI. They're made of ACTUAL FABRIC instead of that creepy plastic rayon shit that a lot of dress pants seem to be made of.

Also-
Sam, I am really really torn about those boots. On one hand, I love how they look when they're worn in and a little busted. On the other, I can't really quite stomach seeing boots intended to protect your feet on construction sites and iron mills and stuff on the feet of prissy hipster fucks on The Sartorialist and the J.crew magazine and shit.
