OKAY so since this is a fashion ADVICE thread

Guys, I am going to a very very upscale socialite style event where I do NOT belong, I am basically going to make my father and his wealthy partner not look like they are super old(they kind of are 60, and 65), and my dad wants to take me out dancing. I have grown up from a kind of not uh.. well off is the nicest way to put it, I am basically kind of uncultured. So basically I am totally out of my element. This is 'the' event of the year for people in Halifax, apparently the average price of some of the dresses women wear is close to 2 grand.

Basically it's very black and white formal, so um, my dress, I think it's okay for this sort of thing.

but what do I do with my hair? shoes? Jewelry? Long gloves? A clutch? No jewelry?

Eep help! I know if I feel out of my element I will not enjoy myself and my dad really wants me to have a good time and I don't like disappoint him.

I don't have any actual suggestions, but I will say that for a very formal event like this you are better off accessorizing less rather than more. Understated elegance will help you fit in much more than wearing anything that could even potentially be considered "gaudy" or too flashy.

Just try to keep it fairly simple, and don't wear anything too flashy.

Andy - Updo for the hair, black heels, if you wear gloves I would suggest elbow length or ones that go 3/4 the way up your forearms, and a black clutch. Jewelry I personally don't like with halters, but you could wear a broach or a bracelet if you want to wear jewelry. If you wear a necklace, make sure it falls right at your collarbone. That's my short little 2 cents worth, perty lady.

A short necklace would be good, but also a waist length one could look smashing as well. I like the glove idea, elbow lenth, and a simple clutch. That should do the trick!

Seconding the updo and plain black heels.  I'm not a fan of gloves, but either way, you look great there.

You are young so it's not expected you necessarily be decked out, I would think. I like the idea of just a necklace, shiny and silver? You are going to be out of your element but you have a great figure so whatever you can do it.

Hey Andy, you have a few options with this outfit, here is my assessment.

Firstly, choose your necklace. It should be a pendant on a change. Shiny silver is a classic option, but it is also very popular.
Gold slightly chunky pendant will have a great impact and be a bit bold. You could accompany this with a simple gold bracelet/chain.
The third option is somthing that is not as shiny. Maybe a dull gold or metalic colour, or something with a bit of a tribal-feel. This might have the tiniest hint of colour. This is hard but if you pick and you will need earrings that match really well.
Possibly you could do pearls if you have a nice set, it's always a good safe option, but might be a bit more predictable.
The 'young' fun option is to pick a bright colour of stone or bead. You could make the most of your age and wear jewellery nobody else there will be able to get away with.

Definitely get a simple black satin clutch. Not too big, something that matches the shine of your dress. Your heels should be satin to match your clutch, maybe peep-toe but with not much other decoration. I'd say no to gloves. You should french your nails, definitely the best classy look. To match this your makeup should be mostly neutrals and pale pinks. Really delicate colours. However if you pick a very striking colour pendant than go all out and match your nails to that.

Hair in an updo obviously, make sure your keep some wispy bits around your face. Keep your earrings really small, prefferably studs, especially if your necklace is the feature.

Gais.

I'm tall, dark and skinny.

I own 7 plain white t-shirts, and equal amount of blue jeans. I also own multiple plaid shorts which I wear a lot.

A lot.

What am I doing wrong?

Get some shirts that aren't plain white.  A couple polos and some casual shirts.  The military button down ones are generally accepted as good looking and cheap.

Like so.

H&M is good for that.

Oh goodness Andy that dress is stunning.

I echo most of what everyone has said - updo, simple shoes, simple clutch. Make sure the bag and shoes match. Go with a small light necklace maybe with a small shiny stone in it? If you do small and shiny necklace, you could bling the earrings up a bit - but don't do big for both.

hello fashion thread
I just bought a new pair of shoes but am not quite sure what to wear with them for a casual look. My typical outfit tends to be jeans/chucks/threadless tees and that won't do with this. So, um skirts? i guess?

I'm crap at the internet, so um... look here?

Bunny, those shoes are great.  You could definitely wear them with jeans, probably bootcut would look best.  Threadless tees probably won't work though.  What else do you own? A cute sweater would look pretty great.

Thrifty fashions!

I actually like this outfit better with my blue tights, but for some reason, those photographs were coming out really weird, like all you could see was bright blue legs.

I love what I did to these pants. They look amazing now. The hat I mostly just added because I was excited that my Southern-Baptist-Winter-Revival hat was the same color purple as the long-sleeved shirt in this picture (they're both actually quite bright. Not sure why they're so dark here). My question is, what shoes do I wear with them?

P.S. Heels are not really an option because I don't have them. Would sneakers look dumb, should I stick to flats or do I need to actually purchase heels?

That's really nice, but sneakers would kill it dead. Flats is good.

Sandy if you were in eastern Germany I'd advise chucks but I don't think that works anywhere else. Flats are the only option, although barefoot works really well! I guess that's not practical for everyday life though.

We went thrift-storing this weekend and got some really good stuff.

And three of the best shirts we got. Top is my wife, other two are me. In the last one, I'm pointing to the word "Puppy!"

We found a bunch of excellent stuff besides that, but we were too busy sorting and bagging old stuff of our to donate that we didn't stop and take more pictures. If you want to see some of the other stuff, I can snag some pics in the next few days.

So, flats or dressy sneaks? That's cool. Next question, would a vest (not sweater-vest) look good with them or would I pushing into Newsie/ plucky Victorian street urchin territory then?
