Mix it up with a turquoise yamacha and a nazi party arm band, then you'll really stick it to the man!

What, wear it on top of my flat cap?

Ahhh I spent like 20 mins trying to find this convo, anyway I didnt we decide that it really isnt about Palestinian solidarity since its just been adopted as a piece of fashion.  And its roots were actually in functionality to keep sand out of desert peoples faces. So really as a symbol of Palestinian solidarity realistically can only be acknowledge as more of a Yassir Arafat solidarity symbol at most.  And even then it petered out in 2003 or whatever when Hamas replaced the PLO in some dubious elections.

We didn't decide anything  :x

Irony != ignorance.

We all know the key to being a proper hipster is a subtle awareness of the fact that you're a douche. If you're putting it out there that you are, or conversely if you're completely oblivious to the fact, you're doing it wrong.

Hopping on the jean bandwagon that I missed last page.

I disagree with the statement about multipe jeans being better than one pair.

My APC New Standards are the single nicest pair of jeans I have ever owned, and yeah they were pricey, I paid 110 for them.  But I have worn them 5 days a week for close to four months, still no wash, and they have a nicer fit and high quality denim than any pair of Jeans i have ever owned.

I know that the denim is subpar compared to a lot of Japanese denim, but it is still great and I don't ever want another pair of jeans honestly until these wear out.

I like scarves, I have hundreds, but I will not wear something that makes a statement unless I'm fully I'm prepared to back it up. I started eating meat recently and now I have to stop wearing one of my favourite shirts as it claims me to be "Meat Free Youth". I'm also not so young. Although I think wearing old straight edge shirts and getting busted up drunk is funny. Is that too close to irony? I'm not sure....

It's like silly people wearing Ramones t-shirts. The ignorance is annoying.

Also it sucks that the one factory that makes the real ones is going out of business because of all the fakes. (I was going to write that sentence intelligently, with a link the an artical about it, but it's saturday and I'm not feeling that bright...sorry)

Things I learned from this thread:

Keffiyehs are a no go unless you are being an ironic hipster at which point you're being an ironic hipster and that's a no go.

Crocs and Uggs are okay but only! if you are wearing them inside and no one sees you wear them.

People like scarves.

Tights as pants are not cool.

Rinse and Repeat.

No no, tight pants are okay, just not when they are being worn by boys and are so tight you can see the details of their junk. (Disclaimer: Leggings are not tight pants. They are not pants at all. They should not be worn as pants, for the reason boys should not wear too-tight pants.)

Tight pants and Keffiyehs are in the same boat as they had there 3-5 years in the sun and we are slowly moving on.  They are both still very wearable, though absolutely skintight tight-pants are still and always were a no, and Keffiyahs no longer have political significance so pretending they do is douchey.

Crocs are going out of their way into finding ways to trick you into thinking they arent Crocs, so they lets change that to *most* Crocs should ever be seen.  Uggs were never a bad thing, people just hate them because everyone has them or talks about having them, ooooh they are too popular, time to up the down and hate on them, right?  Wrong!

And there is nothing inherently wrong with being a hipster, just once again dont be a douche.

Basically there are 2 may pieces of fashion advice.

1) Dress your age, and in a style that suits your body/look/lifestyle, and make sure you are at least a little bit uncomfortable, then put on a blanket of confidence
2) Dont be a douche.

tights as pants are not cool. i've said this maybe 20 times in this thread already but there's always a new page so it bears repeating. i really, really don't want to see your ass crack outline or your vagina outline or your buttcheeks jiggling everywhere. no, it doesn't matter if you are a pretty girl. ladies where i live seem to be really into this and i've still yet to run into a single person where this has actually looked good at all. by wearing tights instead of pants, you are essentially forcing me to stare at your genitals in public and honestly, i find that feeling less sexy and more invasive and uncomfortable than anything.
i am sorry, pretty ladies, but when it comes to tights less is not more.

1) Dress your age

I simply don't know what that means, unless it means to be conformist.  So sod that.

No. People dont hate Uggs because they're popular, people hate Uggs because they are, in essence, slippers. And while the humble slipper has it's place, that place is beside your bed so that you can have warm feet walking around in your dressing gown before you get dressed. And there they should stay. the Ugg should not venture out on grand adventures. Uggs will not feel deprived if they do not get and equal amount of socialistion time as your other footware. Uggs are happy with their lot in life as a slightly overgrown slipper.

Chesire, you would be so much easier to take seriously if you didn't drop the "It's just backlash" so worryingly often. I'll grant you that many people will like or dislike an object just because of prevailing trends, but that doesn't mean that it's okay to make the sweeping generalization that it's the only reason people don't like them. Assuming you know someone's motivations better than they do is pretty presumptious and frankly a bit insulting.

Anyway, I don't think Uggs are as bad as crocs, but when I do see them, they're usually on girls stomping around the complex's laundry facilities in pajama bottoms and university hoodies. Maybe it's possible to do them well, but for the most part I understand why people automatically associate uggs with being underdressed.

What I've learnt from this thread:

1. People believe fashion is about a set of rules that can be universally applied
2. People also believe that it's okay to rip into someone's fashion even though they are clearly not that fashion-forward themselves
3. People seem to also think they know a lot about fashion when they really have no idea what they're talking about
4. As a result, people who aren't as confident think they are fashion-backwards and are too scared to state their opinion for fear of being rejected

You should distinguish fashion, style and dressing:

Fashion is showing off within a rather conformist framework, and is not always stylish.

Style is finding the clothes that are right for you, both in appearance and comfort; it may or may not be fashionable.

Dressing is just that, not even caring; but some people automatically do it with style.

wtf.

From Wikipedia:

Quote
The keffiyeh would later become a trademark symbol of Palestinian politician Yasser Arafat, who was rarely seen without a distinctively-arranged black-and-white scarf (only occasionally did he sport a military cap or, in colder climates, a Russian-style fur hat or Ushanka). Arafat would wear his keffiyeh in semi-traditional manner, around the head and wrapped by an agal, but he also wore a similarly patterned piece of cloth in the neckline of his military fatigues. Early on, he had made it his personal trademark to drape the scarf over his right shoulder only, arranging it in the rough shape of a triangle, so resembling the outlines of the territory claimed by Palestine. This manner of wearing the keffiyeh in turn became a symbol of Arafat as a person and political leader, and it has not been imitated by other Palestinian leaders.

and

Quote
The colors of the stitching in a keffiyeh are also vaguely associated with Palestinians’ political sympathies. Black and white keffiyehs are associated with Fatah, while red and white keffiyehs are associated with Hamas, and were historically associated with the PFLP and other leftist groups. While widely known, this color symbolism is by no means universally accepted by all Palestinians, and its importance should not be overstated
