New guitar, amp and effect questions
« on: 14 Aug 2008, 02:33 »

I've just bought a Squire M80 guitar off of eBay, and I'm really happy with the purchase.  Though I've just bought it and don't technically have it yet, I've fiddled with one in a store, and it plays really nicely, it has a great tone, and not to mention it's sexy.  But all I have is a practice amp that a friend of mine gave me, and I really want to break out of that phase quickly.

I'm looking for an amp that can handle a good amount of effect pedals and that sounds really nice, but one that's budget-friendly (I'm buying a Squire, for shit sake).  It seems like a hefty request to me, but I've been on this forum longer than my post-number implies, and you people know basically everything.  Could you point me in the right direction?

This is the guitar, in case you like making use of your eyes.

PS:  I'm sorry if a thread like this exists, I can't be bothered to look.  If there is one, please link to it or direct me or leave breadcrumbs or something, I'd really appreciate it.

The Guitar Topic: http://forums.questionablecontent.net/index.php/topic,16326.0.html
it's on the front page...

The Guitar Pedal thread came up with a simple search of "guitar pedal": http://forums.questionablecontent.net/index.php/topic,18953.0.html
You probably should be bothered to look next time.

Get an Epiphone Valve Junior or a Blackheart Little Giant/Handsome Devil.  Both are very nice Class A tube amps and are all less than five hundred dollars.  You're not going to get a lot of wattage with these, though.  They're all five or fifteen watt tube amplifiers, but they sound hella good.

Here is a demonstration I found of the Blackheart Little Giant.

Low wattage, whatever. Everyone's ruining their jeans over the Tiny Terror, and that's only a 15 watt head.

Interestingly enough, I posted in that thread.  Page five or so, one about the Shoe Gazer and the Cherry Pop from DeviEver.  And, quick correction, I don't need recommendations of pedals, just amps, though I appreciate it anyway.

The Blackhearts are pretty damn awesome, from what I've seen. Never seen one in meat life though, unfortunately, or I'd probably be playing through it right now.

I don't usually think of myself as meat.  Bag of organs, maybe.  Organ life?

That suggests you play an organ.

I prefer the term meatspace, myself, not sure where it originates from, some cyberpunk book, I would expect.

Derailing your own thread is just gonna serve as a distraction from me helping you (I cannot speak for others).

A Vox AC30 is the only Good Amp, and I am going to steal that guitar from you.

Dude, budget-wise, that thing might as well be a yacht, to me.  I'm but a mere Pizza Hut cook, and my paycheck is only so easy to encumber...  Fuck, it has it's own chrome stand, the bastard has to be good.

And, I want to steal it from myself, it's quite a little sexbot.  It's really inexpensive (I think the shelf price was $300, I got it used for 200), and it plays like it should be much more than that.  I recommend you nab one (from someone else's garage, mind you), it's discontinued and thus dying out.

I like socializing, though.  And thanks to the derailment, I've now added a few words to my nerd-dictionary.  Try getting that in the guitar thread.  And, yeah, I know that thread's there.  I'm not here to show my guitar off, I figger pickytures will help give people and idea of the what-and-how.

What exactly is your budget for this project? I mean, obviously it's less than $3500 if you're not gonna go balls deep and get an AC30 (pansy, a little paralyzing debt never killed anybody). I'll be a bit more reasonable, then, and assume it's something like <$1000.

Any low-wattage tube-powered box (as mentioned before, the Valve Jr., Blackheart Little Giant, Orange Tiny Terror, etc) is a pretty good deal. I swear by my solid-state Marshall MG100DFX, though.

I've got a buddy who has a Crate 30w tube combo (1x10" speaker) that puts out some pretty bitchin' sounds. I think that set him back something like $300.

Never killed anybody?  Haven't you heard of the Great Depression?

Yeah, that's basically my budget, >$1000.  I'm a little apprehensive to say that, as it's a kick in the dick to save up that much with the state I'm in.  The bitch better last a while if it's a thousand bucks.

Patrick, what AC30 do you mean, exactly? Because I have seen some of them for less than €900.

The Custom Classic one sells for about a grand and a half.

I know. There is also a limited edition, hand-wired and all that jazz, for €2300. But, I ask, is that really necessary?

Handwired is a bit overboard I suppose, but the Custom Classic comes with Celestion Blues instead of the stock Vox speakers, which are pretty necessary.

Patrick, what AC30 do you mean, exactly? Because I have seen some of them for less than €900.

Which, when converted to Real Money, is about $1400 or so. Depressing as all shit, man. I agree with the enthusiasm over the Celestions, though. I suppose you could get a standard old AC30 head and get one of their 2x12 cabs (I'm pretty sure they've got one with those speakers, although I could be wrong).
