I don't like this new Mogwai at all. Their musical progression reminds me of Boris', where they went from innovative and interesting music to boring/generic sounding rock music. The vocals on the final track of the ep are horrendous. I hope this isn't what their next album will be like...

23rd of September. Maybe it's silly for me to hope for another Young Team or Come On Die Young...

I completely agree.  Hopefully the album sounds better.  How did you find the single? (The Sun Smells Too Loud)

I'm still hoping for something like "Happy Songs for Happy People" i.e. their best album. This new one....I dunno. I'm worried. I thought moments of Mr. Beast were great and other moments were appalling. My fingers are crossed but I'm worried it may be in vain.

I am confident it will be amazing, as their last two albums are easily their most solid in my book.

Popular consensus seems to indicate that basically every Mogwai album has been fantastic.

the vocals upset me at first, wondering why they sounded so, atypical of previous mogwai vocals, but i am thinking maybe they were made to sound like an aging old man on purpose. i mean this is Mogwai, of course they are going to be paying attention to what sounds consonant and dissonant, just probably one of their more experimental tracks. Or. they have lost their shit completely. I hope its the prior.

If you ever went to Mogwai's official website back when they answered fan-submitted questions every couple of days (before things got kind of ugly), you would know they are massive fans of fucking with people's heads, so I'm pretty sure it's intentional.

If the next album takes the direction of this ep, I'll be happy. The vocals upset me too at first, but I'm starting to like them.

I am not really sure if this will be good. I want it to be, but I can't remember being terribly impressed when I heard Batcat and The Sun Smells Too Loud. I dunno though. I really hope it is good.

Edit: Okay I've listened to the EP a few times, and I have some thoughts.

Batcat is starting to grow on me. It's a really fun and awesome track for rocking the fuck out to. And thats exactly what I expect from Mogwai. This will probably be a great song live. The second track, Stupid Prick Gets Chased By The Police And Loses His Slut Girlfriend, has a nice counter effect to Batcat. Very low key and relaxed. I also really like the fast, dance-y pace to it. This is a pretty good track too. I'm not sure how I feel about the third track, Devil Rides, though. I mean, its alright, but its nothing stunning. I don't really mind the vocals either.
