So I Just got a new Macbook
« on: 26 Aug 2008, 02:25 »

and it's been like eight years since I've touched one last.

What I'm asking for is cool and free downloadable applications for it.  Any kind would be appreciated...A sweet media player and zip/unzipper would also be really appreciated.

Heheheh. Free applications for a Macbook.

Heheheh.

(Seriously, the one thing keeping me from buying a Mac is the fucking expensive apps for them. It's ridiculous.)

And if you played too hard it'd flop out and dangle around by the wire and that is just super ugly

For the categories you requested: VLC, MPlayer, The Unarchiver, the builtin unzipping and zipping stuff, QuickTime player.

Other than that, you should definitely get Adium. I'm not biased at all there ;)

goddamnit as I was writting this the other post covered all of it. but damned if I am wasting this post.

First of all, this is a really good starting list for free open source Mac software: http://www.opensourcemac.org/. That's where I went first when I got a new Macbook.
The rapidfind forums have a lot of cracked programs for when you need stuff that open source can't provide, though that's not often.

As for zipping/unzipping, I use UnRarX, it works for me: http://www.unrarx.com/. iTunes is a plenty good media player. Unless you mean for video files: VLC http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/5758

These guys have been making shareware Mac games for a long time. (Around the System 7 days.)

www.freeverse.com

If nothing else, get 'Jared: Butcher of Song". (3D Hearts and Burning Monkey Puzzle Lab are great, too.)

I use FileZilla for FTP, though Cyberduck has excellent Finder integration. I simply do not use Cyberduck because of the name. (Also because I use FileZilla on Windows).

Perian is a good add on for QT player for playing various divx/xvid and other encodes in QT, but I use VLC most of the time.

There is no good, free archiving utility for OS X. I have to use both Unarchiver and UnrarX to cover most of the bases, and both have awful UIs. I guess I'll try 7zX and use p7zip if I must.
