Oh hey, look, new Mogwai.
« on: 26 Aug 2008, 18:45 »

Oh hey, yeah, it leaked.

It's actually very enjoyable, I'm pleasantly surprised. Lots of fun songs, a bit of rocking out, and even some tremolo picking! Not their best, but better than their last I think (which I liked too.) I don't think its as good as Rock Action or Happy Songs... but a solid album overall. It'll probably sneak into my top 10 somewhere. I'll get in depth to what I think after I spend some more time with it.

Discuss.

i like it a lot. mogwai seemed to be bogging down about two albums ago but their last and this release are really really good

i'd give it an initial 8/10

Downloading now. Damn slow internet. I can't imagine it possibly coming close to Rock Action or Happy Songs. Just can't happen.

My first impression was, "Damn, this Batcat song slays."

So how good is Young Team, really? Pitchfork raves about it, and then basically rags on every other Mogwai album. I thought it was pretty swell, but not like life-changing or anything.

Pitchfork hasn't given a truly positive review to a post-rock album in something like 10 years.  Post-rock is not hip any more; Lil' Wayne and T.I. and other mediocre mainstream rap apparently is.

This new Mogwai is their best yet.  I might even say their best by a significant margin.

I would say Mr. Beast but that's a minority opinion in my experience.

Also I would like to point out that the combination of Sailor Moon and faux-Kerouac / Sonic Youth spelling is perhaps the purest distillation of what this forum is that we have yet been presented with.

I started with Mr. Beast as well, but I would also say Rock Action would be okay, too.

Happy Songs for Happy People is the album that I tend to consider their best. I would start there or with Rock Action. Don't start with Mr. Beast.

This album is really good "driving around at night in the rain with nobody else around" music.

It reminds me of the best parts of Come On Die Young mixed with the best parts of Mr. Beast.

I find myself somewhat displeased that there are no vocal tracks at all though.   :|

I liked it more than Mr. Beast.  'Course I only really devoted about half my attention to it.

I dunno about the driving but the best alone album is Ghostless by Escape the Day. I uploaded it in the mediafire thread a while ago. It is so good.
