Recently i've been watching alot of Weird Al's old videos, and songs on Youtube. You know I actually forgot how funny he was. But let me ask you, what are you guys favorites of Mr. Yankovic's "song" book?

Becuase of the Weird Al mention, when they played 'Teen Spirit' at the pub last night I ended up singing 'it's hard to argle bargle zoust with all these marbles in my mouth' over it.

If you're going to watch Weird Al clips on YouTube, you have to do it right and watch them back-to-back with the original clips for the songs he's ripping off, because he took the piss out of the clips as much as the songs themselves. The lion wandering through the hospital in "Like a Surgeon", for instance, is just baffling unless you've also seen the film-clip for "Like a Virgin" and seen the lion wandering around Venice.

Think about this: Weird Al's had the same band for 25 years. His career has outlasted most of the musicians he's parodied. I saw him in concert, oh, in the mid90s sometime; his shows are even better than the videos.

I do that with Don McLean's American Pie all the time....."maybe vader someday later no he's just a small fry." I get funny looks all the time. But then again, When I hear Weird Al, I'll sing American Pie.

I can't listen to American Pie anymore without substituting the lyrics. I read that Don McLean sometimes substitutes Weird Al's lyrics in concert.

Yes, the Al stage show is something to behold. Now that I'm an old douche I don't recognize most of the songs he parodies (never heard the White and Nerdy "original" for instance) so my favorite albums are probably his 90s ones. "Bad Hair Day" in particular, we always put that on when cleaning house. But my favorite song is "Alberquerque." I'm sure that's a lot of people's favorite.

When I was a kid, I was obsessed with Amish Paradise. I still know all the words. My cousin and I used to bust it out all the time, much to the chagrin of my older brother.

My favorite Weird Al songs are the ones that actually say something original and clever instead of just replacing the lyrics with food.

Dog Eat Dog, Melanie, Albuquerque, Smells Like Nirvana are the ones I can think of immediately.

Amish Paradise, easy. It's one of the few that I can listen to more than once a month and find funny.
He's clever, but the very nature of his music means that as the original fades from popularity the song becomes less funny. And a lot of his songs are clearly album filler.

Yeah I had Alapalooza too and definitely totally learned all the words and dug that track, *then* I discovered there was an even better version out there by Queen, its like a fucking Layer Cake!

Also Jurassic Park was sooooo good.

Close But No Cigar is one of his stronger originals musically. Lyrically, he's clever most of the time but sometimes (read: often) he reaches right to the bottom of the comedy barrel. On some songs (Albuquerque), the quirk is expressed to easily be part of the song and so it works for the most part, but in songs like "A Complicated Song" it borders on asinine too often.

Al(l) of the above.... i've been listening to the compton cd lately and actually listened to all of "Drive thru" and just about pissed myself when he gets to flipping the radio on and its "Led Zep's Black Dog". I also dig the rage against like groove of "i'll sue ya". Just for once i'd like to hear something like "Canadian Idiot" back to back with "American Idiot" on the radio. Oh and by the way if you watch the video for "I'll sue you" you'll see the guy i ripped off (sorta) for my avtar (subtle differences). Oh and finally the song "Yoda" i never realised it was a parody until i heard "Lola" is that messed up???

I used to think Weird Al did his own, original, stuff along with parodies. Now I go searching for what he made fun of so I don't fell stupid when people point it out. It was kind of embarrasing when I learned about the Yoda, Lola thing myself. That party was sooooo much fun after that one.

I also felt like a dork when I realized Michael Jackson sang Just Beat It. Yea....

Weird Al. FTW!!!!

Now that I think about it, he's TLC parody of Waterfalls....Prank Calls. I like it!! Waterfalls is such an emo sounding song. I can't listen to it without laughing now because of Al.

He does do originals, but usually the singles/music video releases are parodies.

And as the post above notes, many of his originals parody the styles of popular artists.

Wikipedia, unsurprisingly, has some good discography data about which songs are parodies, style parodies and completely original.

Well yeah, but it doesn't sound THAT much like Cake. He's still put his own charm into it and I'm glad he didn't just do a straight parody of Short Skirt, Long Jacket even though the ideas were similar.

And the new song is great. A friend from another forum put it nicely that his rap parodies are great because he has more space for jokes and people who say he should do more rock parodies should just listen to a rock song

Parody != Ripping off.

With that said, apart from "White And Nerdy" his Polkas just make me lol.

If I had to pick a single favorite, I'd go with Yoda. Great original song (Lola), great parody, and its about the greatest little green dude ever.

Bohemian Polka, Albuquerque, and Ode to a Superhero (the Spiderman/Pianoman parody) are all up there too, though.

What can I say. I'm still a fanboy after all these years.

Listen to "I'll Sue Ya" right after listening to Rage Against the Machine's "Bulls on Parade".
He just shuffled around the riffs Morello plays.

But my favorite one as far as parodies go is definitely ebay.

I'm still partial to Gotta Bogie, one of the originals from Al's first album.

A neighbour had a 45 of it (it was the B side of Another One Rides The Bus), and we'd giggle like the teenage idiots that we were every time we played it.

There's a contingency of people who believe that the NIN parody, Germs, isn't about any one NIN song in particular and is instead intended to be a song that's a parody "in the style of NIN" (and Weird Al has supported this interpretation on a few occasions) despite the fact that Germs has so much in common with Terrible Lie that it borders upon being a truer parody than many of his other songs. I myself have always been undecided because the song structure is a fair bit different, but stylistically they're so similar it hurts. I have no idea why this shit bothers me, but I was seriously thinking about it a lot last night.

I still love "All About The Pentiums" more than anything.

I like "Albuquerque" because it mentions that he was seated between two large Albanian women with excruciatingly severe body odor, and I like laughing at that because of the fact that about 40% of Albania's population is 18-26 year old females and they really aren't all that large or smelly. They are usually actually really hot.

Whenever possible I enjoy singing his lyrics over other songs. Case in point, I was singing Pretty Fly For a White Guy in Rock Band 2, but I was really singing Pretty Fly for a Rabbi.

My favorite? Too many to pick. Maybe Albuquerque cause I did a project on it.

My favorite Weird Al song is Pancreas. It's not a parody, but it's a style pastiche of Smile-era Beach Boys. And it's all about the functions of the Pancreas. It's actually very educational.

Oh, and "Genius in France", his combination tribute to the music of Frank Zappa, and the comedy of Jerry Lewis. An original, done in the style of Frank's "Mothers of Invention" projects, if I had to guess.
