So your problem is with violent idiots, not sports really. I'm with you there; I can't imagine any reasonable person is in favor of violent idiocy. The fact that many sports fans are violent idiots isn't a problem with sports, it's a problem with society having so many violent idiots.
As for me, I'm more or less in favor of sports. I say "more or less" because I'm not a sports fan myself and I used to be rather opposed to sports, for exactly the reason you are saying (ie. sports create artificial rivalries that people fight over.) At some point in college however my roommate pointed me to a really interesting book, I wish I could remember the title. It was making the same basic argument as tommy and jon, only in a more formal, civic-planning sense. What the author pointed out was how a large reason cities like to have sports teams is that they are a socially galvanizing force, helping to pull communities together when the people in that community (ie. the city) have barely anything else in common.
Meanwhile, getting back to the violent idiots, I'd certainly rather the violent idiots fight each other than attack because of race or class or something. I mean, ideally there wouldn't be any violence at all, but human nature being what it is then it's better to have the violent idiots herded off to something meaningless.
