Falling in love with the Brian Jonestown Massacre again, listening to the Bringing It All Back Home EP right now. Brilliant acoustic record.

Tinnitus.

Oh come on, the joke isn't funny anymore if I can identify at age 22 :D

The Strokes - Under Cover of Darkness

Well okay you beat me to this so I guess I'm listening to the Ergs! - "Everything Falls Apart (And More!)" because it is probably the best song to sing while drunk at a party.

Sure, it's from the 90's, but they are awesome.

do you mean to imply the nineties weren't an amazing time for music?!

It doesn't usually trouble me; I said it because it was bad that day, and it was  what I was listening to...

The 90's were like the 70's but Punk never happened. Definitely the worst decade for mainstream music, and even for many slightly more off-beat genres. We're talking about the decade that hit metal with the one-two slam of radio-friendly grunge and nu-metal, basically killed goth rock and turned the label 'industrial' into a PVC clad joke. That said, I'd take the lamest 90's industrial rock bands over the dreck the kids these days listen to, so maybe it wasn't so bad.

Weezer, Built to Spill, and if you're me, Third Eye Blind.

And thanks to tuathal I have now realized that approximately 90% of my favorite bands came from the 90s.

But then there were pavement, Modest Mouse, Cake, Radiohead, Archers of Loaf and to a certain extent Pixies.

I think we should just agree not to discuss music.

When I think of the 90s, I think of Rocket from the Crypt and The Wildhearts, first and foremost.  The former were undeniably badass, and the latter, while fewer people seem to have heard of them, brought us Ginger, Britain's greatest songwriter.

Some of the artists on there (Coil, Swans and Nurse With Wound instantly spring to mind) Started in the 80's and went on till the 00's, and released the bulk of their work (especially their most critically acclaimed work) outside the 90's. Plus like, Swans split up in the 90's and only got back together last year. Bad argument.

Also, all the bands you've mentioned that aren't very good at making music detract a lot. A few valid points though!

90's are still on the balance the worst music decade though. At least until the 00's. 00's were kinda dogshit.

I do! But they released that one under the name Black Light District. I was being pedantic, but it's probably more valuable to just still call them Coil, regardless.

i've been on a huge incubus kick these last few weeks.  turns out S.C.I.E.N.C.E. is a kickass album to drive to.  and then this evening, i popped Make Yourself on and sang loudly along to "The Warmth" on repeat all the way home from my friend's house.

Depeche Mode - Blue Dress

I realize that like half the music I listen to was inspired by or sounds somewhat like DM. It's not intentional, I just really love them. They're the only band I'd ever consider getting tattoo-d on me. I mean when you've been singing with them for over 20 years (at 4 or so I was singing Enjoy the Silence to my neighbors) I think it's totally allowed.

I still like Incubus. I wouldn't call them the best band ever or anything like that but they have some good stuff and also I really like Dig a whole lot.

incubus is one of those bands that kind of changed my life when i was a kid. they definitely changed my perceptions of music, at the very least. but then they got famous, got poppy, and started to suck

without fungus amongus and SCIENCE i probably wouldn't listen to as much weird music as i do today, and for that i am forever grateful

i think S.C.I.E.N.C.E. is definitely their best, but having said that, i do enjoy their pop stuff too, depends on my mood at the time.

i suggest you give "A Crow Left of the Murder" another chance though, it's far less poppy than "Make Yourself" and "Morning View," has a much more jammy feel to it, quite intricate, without being quite as sharply rhythmic as the older stuff.

and Khar, i can quite understand you not liking incubus, everyone's got their own tastes.  but if you genuinely think they're the worst thing ever, i envy you, becuase there are clearly a million shitty bands you've never had the misfortune to hear.

oh, and on topic - i'm listening to the new And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead.  which is the most unquestionably epic thing i've heard in a long-ass time.

It might just be the bloozelawyer in me, but "The Wrong Light" by Kasey Anderson & the Honkies just floored me. Give it a listen on spinner, track 1 of the album.

Track two, not so much. That's as much as I've heard so far.

anything that comes with an accompanying comment and/or description that intrigues me, i will always check out.  i've found a few good bands i wouldn't otherwise have heard through this thread.

having said that, i'm occasionally guilty of posting just a band and song title, but that's more laziness on my part after having started typing a post, than anything else.

i've found a few good bands i wouldn't otherwise have heard through this thread.

I've had similar experiences on other forums with topics like this. Which, incidentally, is how I came to be listening to this:

Phantom of the Opera - Nightwish

It's not my usual thing at all--show tunes are, though mostly only if they have nostalgic value of some kind--but I love the version of this song.

And now I'm wishing I had a nice, articulate way to explain why. All the things I'm thinking sound really stupid. So I'll stick with "I like it! It's a good song!"

I love that song. Nightwish is so... epic. For lack of a better word I guess? Their music seems like it's big and adventurous and I really don't have good words for this but epic sums it up for me.

I've been listening to a lot of my favorites from high school lately. 311, Jimmie's Chicken Shack, Atom and his Package, and Goldfinger. The cool thing is having certain songs that remind me of very specific events.

I must compare Nightwish to Dragonforce.

not in the Power Metal sense.

there is just so little creative happening there. that in spite of how VERY well done it is. I get bored quickly.

Raise your hand if you actually read and care about what other people are listening to.

Raise two hands if you just come to this thread to post what you're listening to, and don't read or care about the other posts.

anything that comes with an accompanying comment and/or description that intrigues me, i will always check out.  i've found a few good bands i wouldn't otherwise have heard through this thread.

having said that, i'm occasionally guilty of posting just a band and song title, but that's more laziness on my part after having started typing a post, than anything else.

I do the same. I usually try to explain why I'm listening to what I'm listening to, but I too get lazy sometimes (or perhaps more often than not, really).

Right now, I'm listening to

Coil - The Dreamer is Still Asleep.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ZDnSvmv9J0

I've been listening to it on and off for the last few days since I "discovered" it. I can't describe exactly *why* I really like this song, but I really, really dig it.
I'm listening to it on YouTube because I haven't been able to find the CD and I'm not too keen on using file sharing programs or whatever it is people use these days.

"Desolation Roy" by Bob Dylan.

Best song Dylan perhaps? I know that's a tall order but holy shit

Spiderland by Slint.

Oh my GOD. Why did I not listen to these guys earlier? This is so good.

I actually had that same reaction to that album over the summer. If it makes you feel better, I think everybody has that reaction. I didn't listen to that album for years after I first heard of it, 'cause somebody around these parts had made a wisecrack about them. So I assumed "Meh, don't bother." 3 years of my life, wasted.
