Doggamn by Man's Gin.

If you haven't listened to Man's Gin, you should. It can be hard to find more than a few songs on the internet. They are what you get when a metal musician decides he wants to make some bluesy, largely acoustic music. I've heard comparisons made to Nick Cave, Tom Waits, Dax Riggs, and Alice In Chains ballads. Heavy without metal. Doggamn is basically closing time at the bar the album is playing at. Sad but hopeful. It's the music that ushers you out the door while the staff cleans up, the music you hum as you stagger home and pass out on the bed before you even get your boots off.

They've also got Jarboe's live upright bass player, if that gets anyone else interested.

I must compare Nightwish to Dragonforce.

Basic difference is you can pick up goth chicks at a Nightwish concert but the only thing you can pick up at a Dragonforce concert is transmissable skin diseases.

I think I'm actually way more into Zonoscope than I was In Ghost Colours which odd because I remember being really into that when it came out. Maybe I'm just remembering how much I like Cut Copy. For real though, I'm at "Strange Nostalgia for the Future" and the whole thing is moving like an endless train journey.

Yeah. A couple of the best tracks on the album (The Death of Jimmy Sturgis and Doggamn) aren't online, but this one is pretty good: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fr5ltiEg2Ag

Ruins of Berlin, by the Dex Romweber Duo.

Hard to put a label on their music, each song is kinda different, but it's kinda surf-lounge-rockabilly. Yes.

the new Defeater track "warm blood rush."  these guys do pretty bleak hardcore, but there's something about how they do it that i just can't seem to put my finger on, that seems to set them apart.  "travels" and "lost ground" were two of the most amazing hardcore records i've heard in years, and it seems the new one's shaping up to be just as good!

When Messiah Comes - Fiddler on the Roof outtakes

This song is kind of ridiculous. I can't imagine why they cut it from the musical. Though, the ridiculousness might be helped by Sheldon Harnick's inability to sing well.

Manilla Road - Necropolis

"FEELS LIKE
I'M LIVING
INSIDE A DREAAAAM
BUT MY MIND
TELLS ME I'M...
LOST IN NECROPOLIIIIIIIIIS
LOST IN NECROOPOLAAAAAAAAHS"

I've been aware of the existence of Manilla Road for a while, but I always put off listening to them, largely because of their intensely naff, 70's D&D album art which would seem to offer a listening experience pitched somewhere between Nazareth and Def Leppard, but no! This band is fucking awesome, even through the ultra-tinny 80's production. I've got to find some enormous speakers to play this through. This kind of production was not designed for headphones and laptop speakers. It needs real volume, not fake volume.

Spiderland by Slint.

Oh my GOD. Why did I not listen to these guys earlier? This is so good.

I actually had that same reaction to that album over the summer. If it makes you feel better, I think everybody has that reaction. I didn't listen to that album for years after I first heard of it, 'cause somebody around these parts had made a wisecrack about them. So I assumed "Meh, don't bother." 3 years of my life, wasted.

I also heard about them 3 years ago. This is a strange occurrence indeed.

Anyways. New Radiohead album is going for another spin on ye' olde digital music playing client. It's definitely been worth the wait.

I've been cleaning my room (or attempting to).  In that time I've spun the following:

Side 2 of The Best of Earth, Wind, and Fire, Vol.1.  So many good tracks on this side, so funky.
Side 1 of Rumours by Fleetwood Mac.
Side 1 of Running on Empty by Jackson Browne.
Side 1 of Shake the Sheets by Ted Leo and The Pharmacists, which is what I'm listening to right now.  I really like Shake the Sheets.  The songwriting might be not quite as good Tyranny of Distance, but it rocks the fuck out and I have mad appreciation for that.

White Ring - Feathers. Ever once in a while I think I'm completely over witch house, but then I hear a song like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YNOu2oGBFFM and I have to admit to myself I still like a few of them.  White Ring is just like, scuzzed up cave-y sounding dream pop, anyway.

Anyone listened to Journeyman by Clapton? I think its a pretty incredible album and I've been listening to it non stop for the last few weeks. I mean I think part of its allure is that its a lot better than most of his other 80s stuff, but its a nice fusion of blues, rock, some jazzy parts and a few acoustic numbers. Obviously "Running on Faith" is a beautiful song.

I could go on about this album all day but I'll leave you with this incredibly 80s Arnie wannabe Clapton in a video about himself: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zm2PvnM7Vds

Yeah, nah, I'm a snobbish asshole about my tastes. I like to think I've got eclectic enough tastes to get away with it maybe 70% of the time though, so at least there's that.

I hope I never get over how much I like this song. I just wish every song they did wasn't completely drowned in reverb.

Heard these guys were breaking up so I figured I should really get their album after having quite liked the stream of it I heard months ago.  It's better than I remember - really good jangly post-hardcore/emo/mathy stuff with a nice gruff edge to it.
