The Stills - Oceans Will Rise
Jackie Blue:
Picked this up on a whim today, because it's on Arts and Crafts and I vaguely remember liking a performance I saw of them 4 or 5 years ago. Also it was on sale.
Man, good stuff, good stuff. You can definitely tell they're part of the Broken Social Scene family, but with their own distinct touches, like a heightened sense of arena-level grandeur without being too over the top about it. Some songs are very much what BSS might sound like if you took away all the studio production fuckery.
I don't tihnk I've seen anyone mention them on here, so you know, I think some of you should check it out.
De_El:
I have their first album, Logic Will Break Your Heart and I like it a lot, but I can't get over the feeling that they're something of a guilty pleasure. I dunno if that really means anything, only that I blush slightly when listening to them. I'll look into it though, two albums later they've got to be somewhat different, and I would be interested to see how that played out.
Edit: changed a positive to a negative.
Tom:
Really solid pop-rock and an entertaining distraction. I liked it but quite seriously got bored of it in a hurry, I may just give it another listen.
Jackie Blue:
I remember thinking the old performance I saw was "like The Shins, only better", but not particularly amazing or worth buying, either. The new one is definitely a major improvement in writing and playing, it is pop for the most part but I think it goes in more interesting places than the Shins-clone bands did.

i haven't listened to any stills albums other than logic will break your heart, which is not a guilty pleasure in my opinion. it's just kinda nice and bland. so i'm not particularily excited to hear this, especially if it sounds kind of like bss. but i will probably end up checking it out at some point.
