Unless she's growing her own grains and chocolate and whatever else are the raw materials for cake, she already buys stuff that's had interactions with other people.

True, but that stuff, unlike a cake, comes packaged.  Maybe the packaging offers the illusion of cleanliness.  Or enough of an illusion that Hannelore can ignore the truth.  (Hm, I think that principle holds true for many relationships between things and people.)
