there have been threads about it too, but they're also pretty old and i don't have the patience to go looking for them.
it isn't really all that silly i think. you hang out on the same forum for a long time and calling people by their username starts to feel pretty weird. there are a lot of regulars to keep up with, i do not see the harm in having a list people can check in case they forget.

I live with Lunchbox and I don't ever use her real name. Most people on Gabbly do not use my real name. Infact, I mostly use people's usernames because that is how I know you.

i guess it is specific to each person. i like to be called tania cos i don't know any other tanias and i much prefer being called that than ephemere. mainly my point is that i think asking someone what their name is/what they like to be referred as or having a list making a similar point is not really too big a deal. since there's a whole bunch that exist anyway, the only effort inolved is just the occasional redirection.

Man it'd be pretty great if there were a one-post, stickied thread where people could just message a mod/admin and have their username + meat name added.
